Survey: How Do You Use Sony Media Manager?

Other than an occasional glitch that won't let me see the Properties Pane, I haven't encountered any major bugs with MM.
I have been spending about a month tagging and organizing around 2000 video files. It speeds up current projects as well as future ones, especially if I keep up with it as new files are added.
What features do you guys think MM is lacking?
What makes it bloatware?- or what would make it not bloatware?

And one more question:
does anybody know how to add custom icons for tags?
Thanks!

nup...
not anymore..

i tried it but it did nothing to boost any time issues i had with "finding" a file.. that and the fact that most of my stock footage is in QT.. through MM its very slow..
however as ive already managed most of these files in their respctive categories through explorer and basic windows filename and metatags, i simply use the explorer window in Vegas.

Id love to be able to tag each of my files and type in "lower thrid blue" and bring up all lower thirds with the tagline of "blue" in the note, but MM is just too slow and bloats my system...

shame really

either way, i uninstalled vegas, then reinstalled, then as the media manager installation started, i cancelled.
Went into V7, and turned off MM in preferences.
System is as smooth as silk :)

I tried it; didn't seem to help me but I kept it loaded. Then I moved to a new PC, and it crashes if I try and run MM, so I have it turned off. As I didn't find it very useful I've not been motivated to try and figure out why it won't work.

Using a laptop connected to different hard drives often swapped and changed I found media manager a nightmare and now switch it off as soon as possible. However the designers must have had more than a desire to annoy so perhaps the inclusion of tutorials for best work flow might help. I never got past 5 minutes with it as my desire to learn lost out to frustration. kELLY got it right every new project for me starts with new folders and explorer is so familiar. If only media manager could remember what hard drives had the info and what position it held in the pile or its exact location in the house?

Another thing i found frustrating was that it wouldnt update and remove deleted fiels which were no longer there..

for offline databasing, this is ok as u can tag which tape/disc you have this particular clip on, but ive got 2TB here and keep what i use on a day by day basis here..

so...
when i go in and delete sht i dont need.. MM doesnt recognise that its deleted.. either that or im doing something wrong..

either way, MM is no use to me..
Sony shoud have bought out Adorage or Red Giant with teh funds used to develop this.....
would have been a better use of resources..

Vegas needs much more work on the filtering side of things IMO

1. I don't use it. It never installed properly. If given the option, I wouldn't install it.

2. Although I haven't used it, I don't see needing it or it working correctly for me. I delete all media associated with a project after the project is complete as the images and video are project specific. I also use a portable drive for stuff like my royalty free music to move between two editing computers. Can media manager track moving and deleted files so it auto updates?

3. I would reccomend people try it if if works on their machine. It should not auto install though. However it will uninstall and then you turn it off in options or you get an error message. Things that auto-install and are not necessary for the functioning of the product are bloatware. I would bet media manager sucks up resources too.

I'm sorry that everyone has been having technical issues with MM. The only Vegas issues I've run into is with the Raylight plugin for the HVX200. It totally breaks my system down! But I just convert everything to AVIs first and then it works great.

I definitely find MM useful and would encourage people with lots of stock video (and a stable MM) to give it a try. IT takes a while to get everything organized at first, but then finding stuff is a breeze.

I was looking in this thread to see what people who do use wish it would include. Avid always boosts about their great management tools, but it seems I can do all the same stuff within Vegas (assuming that nothing is crashing). Any thoughts?

My own wish is small: custom tag icons!

>>1. Do you use the Sony Media Manager? For how long?

Yes. Since it has been out for Vegas.

>>2. Share with the group your experiences or even lack-there-of with Media Manager...

There is a post be me a long time ago where Media Manager was crashing-big time. As per the Admin, there was some setting to disable, then all worked fine. I tried seting whatever this setting was to the normal default, but it then crashed again. When whatever the post by Admin said is done, all works fine. I found it extremely handy to track various assets.

>>3. Would you recommend to current Sony Media
>>Software users that they begin taking advantage of
>>Media Manager's features?

If you want to, sure. If not, no.

It is definitely a kludgey program. Very add-on-ish. Not very elegant. It works though. If default settings cannot be used, something is wrong. Default? No...not until it works right.

1. No. Virtually of projects have unique assets ( i.e. you film it, you edit it, you dump it. Then, start on next project.
2. N/A
3. N/A

1. Yes, trying to understand something that is a tad more tech than I am.
2. I create a new media library for each project, as well as having a media library for assets such as all ArtBeats, Sony Vision Series, et al stock stuff. I can then quickly access the library I'm interested in adding specific media.
3. It installed immediately and perfectly on my dual core AMD, XP SP2 system. I can easily disable the MM if I chose.

I'm increasingly fond of it.

Good for you Grobsie! Me too.

Hmmm... I'm starting to get a handle on this thread. Interesting.

Look, if you were given/offered MM first off, would you then use:

#1 - Vegas Explorer?
You don't have thumbnails in V Explorer. You do in MM: PLUS you can scrub an event without the need to take it INTO Trimmer or dump on Timeline - yeah?

#2 - Project Media Bins Sorting?
There are some basic IN-PROJECT sorting you can do. Can you do global searching? You can in MM - yeah

#3 - Global Asset Management?
Where would this have been in Vegas? Media Manager!

I have others . .

The point I'm badly making here is that, I'm starting to realise that this thread is appearing to identify probably 2 potentially opposing dynamics - managing MM expectations versus existing workflow experience. If I don't know any different AND I have "formed" my workflow to suit my business from what I do for clients, then why do I need to experiment/experience/change my workflow - why should I? Added to which, if that same s/w then consumes more power than I wish and/or had a bad experience loading it, then it would become an unnecessary inconvenience.

Let's face it, databasing may not be the most sexiest of items when put up against Chroma Keying, Colour Correcting, FX film looks and so on. But ever since I had a view of MM and used it, and the issues I had had with it NOT working within Vegas and finally now working, I HAVE adapted to it; changed my workflow, and yes, even with project-centric project-limited media; opened up my libraries of media; provide a more fluid workflow PLUS I can do this OUTSIDE of a project.

This last point has a real value for me. I can create a "sketch" of the project without needing to confuse myself from within the project. And guess what? ALL this work is global! It is available to other projects too!

Look, Media Manager is an experience, that if it had come prior to the ways we have previously, traditionally used navigation and media collation, then my guess we would NOT be having this debate. However, MM has come AFTER the "event", and for many who have written here, it has fallen from their use - for the reasons said.

I see MM as being yet another workflow tool. A tool that allows me to be more creative and hopefully more responsive to my hard won clips. Reflecting the best I can do with those same clips for my viewer clients is what it is all about. Any tool that gets me there faster and closer to that all important story and thence to try even MORE, gets my vote.

And yes, there is even more I'd like it to do.

#1 - I'd like to be able to drag from MM to Trimmer ( . . yes I do this already . . read on!) > create a scrubbed SUBCLIP from within Trimmer > Drag back OR better plop a TAG onto that Trimmer Subclip.

#2 - 16x9 Preview in Thumbnail

#3 - Looped Thumbnail

#4 - Tags TO Media Bins!

If you have read so far, and are starting to understand what I'm badly attempting to explain - thank you!

<edit> I needed to do some "syntax" editing!!</edit>

Grazie just an idea. How about making a little tutorial film? using media manager and best settings for maximising workflow? You could put it on kellys site? It'd be a great resource.

This has renewed my interest in Media Manager and may have spoken to soon. Already I have discovered an excellent use. I often use acid to compose. But sometimes want a loop in vegas and by using media manager can audition them on the hoof so to speak. This is already making my life easier.

EXACTLY!!!

Now, create/name for a TAG called - "Mark's really crucial Loops" - and DRAG that TAG to that LOOP. Guess what? You have a UNIVERSAL TAGGED folder of all those loops you tag ready and willing to be used in ANY OTHER Project!!! They still reside in their original folder, 'cept now YOU have a global TAG collection of 'em.

. . . Mark, you have been converted! My job here is done!

Seriously, until such time as you NEEDED to do something you didn't know. More to the point until you SAW an option to make your life easier . . . yeah?
