I wound up going to Nero 6 for "authoring" SVCDs. Render to .avi out of the Vegas timeline, and then just drag and drop to add the file(s) to the Nero SVCD wizard. Nero "transcodes" and burns. You get a menu page, buttons, background music, and 30 minutes or so of really good quality. Not a DVD, but that comes next (for me). Check dvdrhelp.com for SVCD player compatibilty data base.

I still use Vegas 3.0. I think that with VCD your only choice really is mpeg1. DVD is mepg2. Depending how you author, if you do with chapters etc. some software will recognize the CD as only mpeg1 and also won't re-render it. So I think you answered your own question. Yep mpeg1 for CD's. Lots of folks here have likely talked about this on the forum, so do some searches.
