SVMS Platinum 8 -> what to use for screen recorder

Greetings All!

I'm doing a small project at work, just a side-thing, but I specifically got permission to install / license / use a copy of Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0.

Now, my problem is that I'm having a very hard time finding screen recording software that creates an output file that SVMSP will actually be able to load / run / and render.

My best success so far was trying something called "BB Flashback Express 5", which did produce an mp4 that I could import and manipulate. However, SVMSP would hang every time it tried to render the final product, until I removed that clip.

I've just finished trying Camtasia (free version) but it refuses to even load the .mp4 file. I've also tried "Free Screen Recorder".

All I want to do is capture a few screen recordings, 5-10 second snippets, and include them in my overall video. And the amount of time I'm having to put in here just trying to get this part working consistently is NUTS.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Oh, forgot to mention: I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit.

You haven't told us what capture softwares you have tried, what codecs were used, and precisely what problems you had with each, so it's anybody's guess . .

As I did say above, I've tried the following capture software:

"Free Screen Video Recorder" -- dumps out .mp4's that Vegas can't read.
"Camtasia Studo 8" -- ditto
"BB Flashback Express 5" -- Vegas seemed to load it just fine into Trimmer and project timeline. But when rendering, it would reach the point where the new clip was and hang.

What SHOULD I be using ?

Camtasia can save in other formats such as AVI.

I wonder, is that in the free version only? Because when I click on "Produce" with the Camtasia Studio Recorder... the only options it gives me are MP4s.

Googled to find how Camtasia's recorder allows you to save output to .AVI. Told me to check Options menu. But every time I'd try to open the Options menu, the recorder would crash.

Tried rebooting. No change.

Googled the problem and solution was to locate a particular .dll and rename it. That got the Options menu working again.

I will attempt to capture something as .AVI and import it into Sony Vegas Movie Studio... and repost here when I'm done. Thanks!

Good job at doing your research on the error. Could you post that here in case someone else finds that problem?

Have fun!!

The mp4 "failures" are because of your Vegas version, not the softwares.
You need Platinum 10-13 in order to work with those mp4's.
AVI captures are fine, but take up a lot of space, and probably need to be kept under 4 GB.
