SWF vs. FLV (Using On2 Flix v.8 and/or ?)

Soniclight wrote on 9/25/2009, 12:01 PM
I am aware that FLV is more versatile and doesn't have the problems that SWF can have such as buffering and occasional playback problems. But for some reason, when I do a side-by-side comparison of an identical file in both formats, SWF is always crisper, cleaner. I need quality due to the subtlety of some of my signature style which includes using Particleillusion effects.

So I've been using SWF exclusively though a bit reluctantly since I can't be as creative in terms of player options.

As to using On2 Flix 8, yes, it's a bit out-dated, and no, I can't afford the higher end progs for such files. I'm quite satisfied with what Flix does with SWF. I also reverted back to the original v.8 after an update for that version for I didn't like the new interface, etc.

On rendering in SWF (Flash 8 SWF) in Flix:

--- I usually keep source frame rate (NTSC), VBR/local playback with max bitrate of 448 and 44100 Hz/128 kBits for audio since it's music.

Perhaps someone can help me out on figure a way to solve this FLV vs. SWF difference, if realistic.
And/or maybe I'm just doing something wrong somewhere.

Thanks.

Bump.

The first incarnation of FLV generally used h.263, admittedly not the perfect choice for clarity vs. compression.

The latest incarnation of Flash takes h.264 media, with really nice results. I would wait a bit for the free and third-party utilities to catch up to Adobe (as far as encoding h.264 to Flash), and try it again.

SWF and FLV are wrappers. It all depends on what compression you use inside the SWF and which one inside the FLV wrapper.

OK, thanks to both of you. On2 Flix is not freeware but more the simple-version. And since Google bought out On2--which was the engine behind Adobe Flash for the last few years-- who know what's going to happen,

But as suggested, maybe I'll wait a bit on going FLV or try an FLV with low,, lossless or no-compression files and see what happens.

Have you tried both the VP6E and VP6S options in FlixPro ? Maybe even the old MX version too ? They give radically different results depending on the input,

I did something along those lines quite a while back but got confused or something about it and so decided to stick with v.8.
