James,

In theory, this should work just fine. Several users are reporting
problems with the MTC feature in Vegas so you might have to wait for
an update before this works.

Basically, you set Vegas up with the proper time signature and tempo
for your piece. Configure the MTC Sync option to generate a master
clock signal and route it to a free MIDI port. Connect this to the
selected sync input on your Cakewalk machine (you should use two
machines to do this). Set Cakewalk to slave to MTC and you should
now be able to start/stop Cakewalk with Vegas. You might need to
adjust the time code offset on either machine to get things lined up.

If you want to do this on one machine, you'll need a software MIDI
router utility. Be prepared for poorer performance.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Brian,

Thats about what I thought should happen, would rather sync the two on
the same machine using Hubi's loopback, but I'm afraid the timing just
would'nt be there.

I'm with Brian, on paper it seems to be all there. In the Sync Prefs
page you can:
1) generate MTC w/selectable frame rates
2) generate Midi clock
3) chase to MTC w/selectable frame rates
...so depending on what your sequencer likes to see...TC or
clock...you just pick one, hit play, then pray. As far as the Hubi
deal, I havn't tried it, but I'm a subscriber to the dedicated boxes
approach to handle things separately. Currently I have a stand alone
sequencer (a vintage Roland MSQ-700 I'm proud to say, a dumb but easy
to use relic from back in the day...just like its' owner)...it's not
able to read anything but FSK. However it will soon be augmented by
a dedicated MIDI PC. I know it's a cost issue with a lot of us and
I'm having to wait for my budgeting to catch up with my needs, before
I build a dedicated Audio only machine...but the reality is that it's
better with the Wintel state of things to ask your boxes to do less
NOT more...so much for multitasking!@#%$...or the paperless office
for that matter!

Yes, Vegas runs best when it's the only thing running. Save your
firebreather Pentium for Vegas and go dig up an old '486 to run
something like MIDI Orchestrator (or, perhaps as I do, an old Mac
Quadra running Master Tracks. Your clients will feel right at home
regardless of whether they are Mac bigots or Wintel lovers...)
