sync cusor grayed out

I'm trying to place some keyframes in generated media text to change background color several times synced to the audio track by watching the wave form. The cursors are not synched and the sync cursor button is grayed out. Can someone please tell me what I'm missing?

Sync to timeline is grayed out for generated media because the media might be used in muliple events, which might use time stretching or velocity envelopes. It's not always a one-to-one mapping, so sync is always grayed out.
