System Crash When Closing Vegas

I have Vegas 6d, however, I've seen this problem with earlier versions (like "b" or "c", I guess). I love using Vegas for video editing - and, so far, I've done simple SD projects. I had previously been using Adobe Premier 1.5, but got tired of the constant crashes. It was a relief to use Vegas which didn't seem to crash at all...

...however. My problem occurs when I'm finished editing. I go to close the program and it seems to shut down. Then, Windows itself just dies. It's a complete crash. Upon system restart, I get a message that Windows has recovered from a serious error. I log the error to Microsoft and they report back that there was a driver problem.

With all the other programs I run, nothing like this ever happens.

Has anyone else experienced this? I've searched the forum and have come across folks with crashes during operations (usually rendering). But, in my case, it's only after something like that has been done.

I have gone the route of blowing dust off of the CPU chip fins. I have lots of storage and memory. With Vegas active, I can swap between it and other programs and do stuff sumultaneously. It's only when I do a program exit that things go terribly bad. I've gotten into the habit of closing all other programs before shutting off Vegas knowing that it's highly likely the operating system will die.

If microsoft is saying it's a driver problem, then it may well be. I'd start by making sure that you have the latest video and audio drivers for your hardware.

Well, I guess I had distrusted Microsoft, or maybe I just assumed it was a Vegas problem since in was ONLY Vegas creating the problem. (No other system crashes upon exiting ANYTHING.)

However...I took the plunge. I removed my ATI All-in-Wonder card and replaced it with an nVidia based card. I removed all the ATI drivers/software and, after three successful editing/rendering sessions, I have crash-free exits again. Of course, three tries isn't enough to absolutely confirm that ATI was, somehow, causing the problem, but it sure looks promising.

I've given up my ability to capture video from an analog source because of the change, but I don't do that a lot so I can live with it. Maybe it'll give me the impetus to get a Firewire-based capture device. That way, no more drivers to temp the Windows gremlins.

Thanks to Scott for pointing out the obvious!
