Tell us about your hardware. So far the first thing that comes to mind is a firewire problem.

That's pretty skimpy on the details and even if you told us the model name you'd still be making us go to the shuttle site and look it up. (Not very likely, I think.)

For starters, you say you get an error when you connect your camera. Are you connecting it via firewire? Are there other firewire devices also connected? Are you also trying to get Vegas to output a picture to a monitor or TV through the firewire cable?

A hard and sudden crash like that is usually hardware related. It could be heat or bad memory but my first guess is firewire, just because you say you are having camera trouble.

You're system is surely using an onboard 1394 chip. It may not be playing well with your camera. It's possible there is a driver update available for it, or a firmware update, or even a BIOS update available for your system.

yes i am connecting via fire wire and no other devices are connected. no i am not going to a monitor. i am only recently having camera download trouble but have had the crashing for a while now. i will have the system tested for bad memory, and will also have the fire wire tested.
Thank you for your time.

Maybe try a different firewire cable. If it's crimped or weakened it could cause trouble.
