Greetings all,
I am a Systems Engineer with multiple I.T. certifications and just wanted to pop in here to try to help out with some of the crashing, freezing and Not Responding problems that this wonderful software has been having.
I enjoyed Sony's Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 in WindowsXP, have worked with Vegas Video in the past, and have more recently been using Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 Platinum Edition in Windows7 (64-bit). I too have run into the 'greyed out screen' occurring with Vegas and had many "Not Responding" errors whie rendering, at the end of rendering and during editing.
After troublehsooting my own system (hard drives, reinstallation of Windows, etc) I have come upon a combination that worked for me and wanted to share it with the Sony Vegas community. I realize that every single system is different in it's own way (even with the exact same models of hardware inside, if you can believe that) and this may not work for you; but I hope that it works for some of you and at the very least, helps Sony (I see that some employees stop by once in a while) patch up these issues that seem to be occurring with their wonderful application.
What I tried (and did not work):
- Increase HDD space/Defragment/etc
- LARGE ADDRESS AWARE patch/fix
- Run in WindowsXP Compatibility Mode (Service Pack 3)
- Run As Administrator
Trying all of these, any time that I rendered/worked with M2TS files (even Sony's codecs) it would end up freezing and Not Responding. Testing with 720p resolutions seemed to bypass whatever the problem was and render fine. Working with 1080-line material seemed to trigger it into Not Responding eventually (interlaced or progressive).
What I tried (and worked):
- All of the above + Run in WindowsXP Compatibility Mode (Service Pack 2)
I recall in WindowsXP that SP3 (for the systems I worked on and had at home) had a few issues with video software in various forms (whether related to codecs or windows APIs I do not know) and thought I would try 'going back to SP2' within Windows7x64. It worked.
I repeatedly tested working with M2TS material at 1080i+p and it is running along great. Perhaps this will help some developers as another starting point, perhaps not, and I do not know if this will work for 'everyone' (End Users) but if it helps just one person out, I am glad.
I will continue to enjoy Sony's Vegas software in all their future iterations and I just thought I'd drop in to see if this can help you too.
Take care
