Do you know how hot your CPU is getting? That seems to be the problem most of the time whe computer freezes durring render. Also, are you sure all the media in your project is good? A video, sound file, etc. could have a problem with it (or something else is trying to access it).

Get prime95 and run a torture test. It tests primes to see if they're Mersenne primes and checks against known results in the torture test. Any hardware glitches will produce an error.

On a hyperthreading CPU, I find prime95 works better while also running CPUBurn. CPUBurn makes your processor hotter and prime will find errors faster.

Read the readmes. As a precaution, back stuff up before you use CPUBurn and don't install stuff.

Use motherboard Monitor 5 to check your motherboard's temperatures.

That could be memory problem too. Download Memtest86 and test your memory. Memtest86 it is the only program who really find a problem.
Locking up definetly hardware problem.
