I have a 2.24G (10:44min) AVI file that I am trying to render to mpeg-2 for a dvd burn. VV3 renders only 6:31min of the file and the computer reboots. The render looks good except for it is not finishing. I also tried to burn the AVI file to dvd using Sonic MyDVD and I get the same result the computer reboots. Any ideas?
Is this consistent, i.e., when you re-render does it crash again?
There were reports of bad RAM, overclocking, power supply problems et al. that led to crashing during rendering. Check the old threads for some testing ideas (do a search on mpg and crash).
But you're using VV3. I couldn't find the thread quickly, but there was an issue when people were rendering at "non-standard" bitrates, i.e., changing the bitrate from anything other than the default. There was a bug that caused VV3 to slowly increase its RAM requirement until it just ran out and crashed the computer. To test this, start a render then open up Task Manager and watch the RAM. If it just rises and continues to rise, this is it. There was a bug fix, so make sure you've upgraded to the latest VV3.
Yea, I remember with one of the people with this problem it turned out to be heat related. They opened the side of their case and blew a house fan at it and were able to render longer. These are not fun problems to solve because it could be so many things.
thanks for the reply, it gives me some ideas where to start my research. I think I will try the house fan idea first. I'll keep you updated on the progress.
I doubt that it is heat related otherwise you would have had issues rendering to AVI as well.
Why don't you list more specifics about your system including the OS, etc. and maybe we can better help you to figure it out. Also tell us what you have done successfully using Vegas 3.0. You may also want to download the Mpeg Encoding Guide guide from this website and look it through:
JohnnyRoy right on about the heat issue, I directed a house fan into the computer and the render finished I also rendered a 20min AVI to mpeg-2 and it also rendered fine. Thank you so much, now what do I do short of keeping the fan handy with a open case?
craftech, I have not rendered this large of a project to AVI they are captured AVI's. p4 1.4, 384 MB RAM winXP home, with a new 300W power supply.
Thanks so much guys, now I get to burn my first DVD project and get paid for it, I am having so much fun with VV and getting paid for, how cool is that?
Your case may be too small as well. Certainly, you cannot install extra fans if there is inadequate ventillation area inside the case and a power supply which cannot keep up with what is attached to it now, let alone extra fans.
Borrow someone's power supply and try it again.
It was a shot in the dark but I’m glad it worked. I’ve been putting together a parts list to build a new PC and I’ve been wondering if I could get away with a mini-tower instead of a full-tower, but you just convinced me that a full tower (which gives more room for fans and air movement inside) is well worth the extra size it takes. Good luck on your project.
