Take the 9(c) Deal or wait?

hackazoid wrote on 12/28/2009, 10:07 AM
Vegas user since v5, running 8c now. Only an amateur using for family and friends. Like features such as the muliple tracks vs Movie Studio.

Been stuck with red frames and crashes on a 40 min vacation video from 1+ years ago, so a bit wary on upgrades as v7 had worked fine.

I see a lot of issue posts with 9c, particularly with JPEG/AVCHD, which is what I'm using now with my Pany ZC3. I have a group golf trip project to do with it in widescreen (not trying Blue Ray) so can't have those issues. Do re-size the photos altho v9 supposedly helps.

If I do the "deal" upgrade, can I keep the 8c as backup? Somehow my v7 went away in the v8 upgrade. I see posts of people with multiples so probably some option I did wrong?

Also... do we expect 9d and 9e before v10. Frankly, I'd be willing to pay $250-$300 for something that works vs $150 and lose hours and hours of time re-doing things like in my failed 40 min project.

Thanks for any opinions from the power users.

V7 IMHO was the last stabel version of Vegas, and that one worked fine for me as well.
9c has issues with certain pictures on the timeline and has given me trouble to the point of un-installing and waiting for 9d.
I would not upgrade to 9c until they have that version cleaned up esspecially of you are using multiple JPEGs PNG's or really any kind of pic on the timeline.
Whoever knows the due dates of 9d, 9e or even 10 will not speak!
No one will know excactly when the next release will come out.
Hopefully soon!

Thanks, was basically thinking that taking the deal gets me in the upgrade path IF (big IF) there was at least a 9d fixer release coming as part of their tendency.

Then, if I can keep 8c alongside, I'm like I am now but positioned for the future and hoping Sony gets it right.

Otherwise, I'd wait for 9d or v10c and pay more.

Any opinions on the Freebies you get with the deal?

I am in a similar situation to you except that I use it for work as well.
I am running 6d, 7d (7e they broke it), 8c.
You can have all installed at the same time. There is no special procedure at install of newer version.
After watching the many posts about 9 I can find no reason to upgrade at any price. There is no certainty that there will be a 9d as it is quite common these days to go on to the next version without fixing the current one. (Applies to all vendors)
If you read the posts carefully you will find that the most knowledgeable people around here are using older versions because they work. That way they can focus on how to get the job done and not how to work around the bugs.
It seems that SMS have sacrificed Vegas' reputation of being the most stable and reliable NLE in search of new features partly driven the cursed AVCHD in all it's flavours.
Some will try to tell you there is nothing wrong with 9 because 'it' (crash & burn) hasn't happened to them yet but it won't stem the flow of angry posts from disappointed users.
For now my money stays in my wallet until I can genuinely believe it is fixed and offers new features I need.
Currently, correct handling of colour seems to be the only real bait but not if my projects can't be completed.

I was happy with V8 and did not intend to upgrade until I got the deal offer, so I took it. I left V8 installed just in case, because of the horror stories I've heard. I've played in V9 (32 bit) and had no issues so far. And I've got to tell you... being able to bring in XDCam EX clips right into the timeline without having to go into Clip Browser and convert them is really cool!
Malcolm D wrote on 12/28/2009, 11:40 AM
I am an EX1 user and aware of the native editing capability but I am quite happy to use Clip Browser to make mxf's to use in 8c.
The advantage is that this creates an automatic back up.
Yes, it takes time but so would any back up.
Native editing could be useful but would probably encourage laziness in backing up files.

Wait it out till 10.

Im a 8.0c user and have had excellent luck so far. I used to edit HDV and am now editing all AVCHD off the HMC-150.

We are so close to version 10, and version 9 has so little, if anything to offer the 8.0c user, I just don't see a reason.

I do multi-cam wedding edits and short projects like poker runs, etc. along with family video projects. I have so little time for editing, I just don't want to mess with what works already.

If they ever put a titler in there I can figure out how to use, that's a bonus (never figured out the "Pro" titler, I guess Im not a pro yet).

"We are so close to version 10...."

Are we really? And how many past new versions have not suffered the same or new problems upon release???

9c will, (and does), work for most people with adequate, properly engineered machines, (major mfg... no homebuilt...no overclocking, etc.), who are judicious and reasonable in what they ask for from the software.

I built my own system and have ran both 8 and 9 on mine without stability issues. I have built the last 3 editing systems I owned and only this last one was an intel based machine. All three have not suffered from stability issues.

I took the offer even though I already own 9. I took it because I thought it was a good deal and split the cost with my contract employee so he could be current.

Sorry to say, but is quite clear that 9.0c is flawed, or at least is causing severe problems to too many users, including myself. And this is not because of shortcomings in the hardware!

I was forced to move back to 9.0b to get some workdone, 9.0c simply just turns too often non-responsive for long periods, making it impossible to use. 9.0b works in this respect fine on the same PC. Sadly 9.0b just has its own playback problems with HD material, so it cannot be used for any serious HD work.

For now its a matter of choice, I have to choose which version of Vegas to use (8.0c or 9.0b-32 bit, 9.0b-64bit), depending on the material I throw on the timeline... Thi IS pathetic, but gets my work done, however with some frustration an ineffective usage of my precious time.

So SCS - when can we expect to see the 9.0d version released ???
=====================================================

I know - those of you that knows - cannot tell, and those that doesn´t know - will just speculate...

I think we "sufferers" really deserve to know about the release schedule. It would be easier to "suffer" if you know for how long?!

So far I have just selected wich Vegas version to use, among the versions I have installed. If the degradation of Vegas continues at this same pace, I might soon select something completely different...

The situation is midly put very irritating. I love the software and the UI, but the9.0c is not stable enough. Version 6 was the rock solid one, it NEVER caused any problems,it NEVER crashed... Since then we have got a ton of more functions, but lost the robustness...
