TC manual entry and vv4

i sort of avoided this for some time, especially after mike k. sent me a well written guide, that didn't seem to work the way i expected....

i have a number of clients who send me edl's compiled from rushes, and usually hand written. on my regular system it is simply a matter of calling up a screen, and typing a list of in/out's, tape numbers, etc., the system then simply automatically compiles them, pausing only when it needs a different number tape - sophisticated batch capture if you like.

for the life of me i can't seem to do this in vv4 (does 5 do it?). is there any way of simply typing in tc's off line? everytime i try in advance capture (with a tape in to actually get the marker boxes active), the in or out point simply reverts to the position of the inserted tape when i mark (press) in / out point...

other than this, i think vv4 is tremendous - but the above seems like a trivial reason to hang onto my old (but very reliable) es7....

Yes, that's what those buttons are supposed to do.
Just type in your timecode, then hit Log In/Out to Batch Capture later, or Capture In/Out to capture right then.

the problem is; i enter a timecode, and when i click to enter an in / out, or add to log, the code jumps to some arbitary figure?

this is highly annoying. obviously i can enter figures, vv just doesn't want to recognise them!

is vv5 any different with regards to batch capture?

I'm afraid V5 seems to be the same. (stop press - see below)

I remember missing this when converting from Premiere 3 years ago.



EDIT - I just tried with a tape in the deck, and it appears to be working ok.
I typed in numbers for IN and OUT, the duration appeared below, and clicking on log in/out below created an offline clip in the bottom window.

Now, could it please function independently of having a tape in the drive, so we can do this on a laptop anywhere.

no luck - still jumps to arbitary figures when i move to next input. do you think a re-install would do any good - i'm a bit wary at the moment since i've got two projects i'm still working on....

and YES - Clip Logger looks great, the only thing is having to upgrade to 5.....

Leslie - I just tried with V4, and once a tape is in the drive, which I hadn't previously realised was an issue, and it works just as I described with V5.

So, yes, a re-install may be the solution.

This is version 4.0d (Build 205)

oh dear - i can be quite stupid at times - then again, so can sony...

having worked with the es7 / es3, and numerous online sony edit controllers i was simply entering codes direct via keypad. just realised that you have to enter colons, and periods between numbers!

i mean, where's the sense in having to take your fingers of the numbers to shift colon between digits!!!! is it the samr in 5?

I think you'll find that you can interchange between simple full stop (period?), a comma or even a space will do the same job as a colon.

That's not true. I enter timecodes as: 1032500
to get a timecode of: 01:03:25:00

all the time. You just need the right number of digits. For example, 30000 will translate to: 00:03:00:00

i have to put a space/colon/stop, whatever between figures, otherwise it reads input as frames!

I'm using Vegas 5. Don't really remember the behaviour of Vegas 4 in that regard and don't have it installed on this machine. I may test it later on another machine.

I tried to check in Vegas 4 but the computer did not have a device connected and did not allow entering the numbers. I'll have to try again when I do have a device connected.

That is insane. Very stupid design for such an otherwise excellent editor. I can't believe it but then again the Final Cut Pro logger I used once (standalone) is the same way and people just accept that I suppose.

Leslie, this is just Mother Nature's way of getting back at you for all those bad things you did when you were younger - or maybe you still do for all I know :-)

Unfortunately the answer is yes, you do need a camera/deck hooked up AND a tape in it. I just tried it on my office machine and batch capture wouldn't allow me to enter time code until I popped a tape into the deck.

never got back to you about this cause i just carried on with the es7, and am likely to if i have to enter numbers with stops/colons/whathaveyou. it seems 5 takes straight input - which i've said somewhere is probably a big incentive for me getting it.

am working away from computer at the moment, but am wondering whether i have to change tape to change tape entry, if you know what i mean...

(probably the effects of a misspent youth, or old age ;-)

Or a combination of both :-)

I'm at home right now, it's almost time to go to sleep and, most important, I don't have a camera to test it out.
As I recall though, you don't have to enter numbers with stops/colons/whathaveyou. Seems to me that if you wanted to enter a time of 02:27:34:15, you'd simply type 2273415 and hit enter. If I get a chance, I'll try it at work tomorrow as we still have one machine with Vegas 4 on it and let you know for sure.

An update for you finally. You definitely do not have to enter numbers with stops/colons/whathaveyou. What I did with Vegas 4 is, first of all, make sure a miniDVcamera/deck is hooked up with a tape in it. Go into Batch Capture mode and double-click in the TImecode in box (to allow you totype over the 00:00:00:00 that's already there) and enter your in point time. Then go directly to the TImecode out box, double-click again and enter your out time. Then click the Log In/Out button and your clip info should show up in the bin at the bottom of the screen. Let me know if this works for you. If it doesn't, sell a sheep or ten and buy Vegas 5 :-)

I was getting ready to fly down myself and work through it with , especially since I showed a group of (non-broadcast & barely computer literate)students how to do it yesterday and they had no problems at all.

sweet bird of youth - and all that crap. i'm just turning into one of those old farts i tried to avoid in my teens. i often wonder what my students think about me (they come back so that's something...)

anyway, now i've got that sorted out, onward -

since i'm toying with upgrading my pc, what do you think about hd's? other than 7.4, and seperate, is there any real adavantages to raid. sata, etc.,?
