Templates for mp4 files

Jim-Clark wrote on 4/7/2019, 2:08 PM

I need to learn more about what the different options are for templates are making mp4 files from HD video. This video would mostly be not for internet but some could be for internet. Currently have Movie studio Platinum 15 and it looks like the best choice is the Magix AVC/ACC MP4 Template but I would like to know more which options to choose and what to customize.

Thanks in advance

Jim

Hi Jim, can you provide a bit more information what your end goal is, such as, are you interested in getting the fastest render times? If so, please provide your GPU make, model and how much vRam.

If you are more interested in better quality (as in less quality lost from your original source media), can you provide the specs on your source media?

EDIT: Ops, I just realized I'm in the Movie Studio forum, please disregard this ----> Are you opposed to using an add-on to Vegas Pro to use for rendering, such as Happy Otter Scripts?

Main focus is to not loose quality at all, I do not have Vegas Pro I have Movie studio Platinum 15 i have the upgrade Movie studio Platinum 16 but after looking it over I am not sure it really does anything for me I may ask for a refund.

Jim, can you use the free app Mediainfo to get the specs of your source media and post a screenshot here.

Download Mediainfo here.... https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Start Mediainfo, select the 'View' tab, select 'Text mode. Then select the 'File' tab and load your source media. Then select 'File' > 'Export' to write a text file with the reported specs, copy and paste those secs here.

It it really going to vary. I have captured all of our old video taped family movies from over the years and the formats have been VHS, 9mm, Mini DV and now we have a full HD camera. I know on the older ones there is no need to up the resolution to hd but starting with the mini DV I want to make sure I keep as much as I can in the edited files.

Here are 2 sample render templates.....

The only difference between these two is the bit rate I have selected. The higher the bit rate, the better the quality. The higher the bit rate, the larger the rendered file physical size will be. The higher the bit rate, there is a point you will not get any better quality, just a larger file size.

either of these 2 render templates should provide you will pretty good quality and reasonable file size. These are delivery formats for viewing. They are not good for using as source media in future projects, and by my standards would not be good for archiving, but for viewing on your PC or Youtube, they should look pretty good. These are also the setting for 1080 FHD 29.970 fps progressive, the faster the fps, the higher the bit rate must be raised to keep the same quality. The higher the resolution, the higher the bite rate must be to hold the same quality.

Only you can determine if the quality in a certain render settings/codec is providing you with acceptable quality for your viewing.

So iv the viewing were to be on my tv at home how would you change the bit rate? For my archiving file I have just been using the AVCHD

j-v wrote on 4/7/2019, 5:16 PM

I think your choice for that codec is the best one.
Normally if you use "Make Movie" the choice for the used template in that codec will be the right one and set to the settings of your projectsettings.
They have to be in pair with the source video that on the computer cannot be VHS or 9 mm because that are not digital formats.

So the best way to get as much the same as your source is to let the program choose your projectsettings with this button

If your project has more than one source size you have to choose what type you want to make and than sometimes you have to crop some kinds of source material as with DV(4:3) together with FHD.

I cannot see your TV from here!!! (sorry just adding a funny, I hope you are in a good mood). If you like the quality on your PC, I would try it on your TV, and if I was happy with that quality I wouldn't change it. If you are not happy, experimentation may be your friend.

"Main focus is to not loose quality at all" can not do. compression is lossy.

Pumping air into SD video to be HD wont make it better on your 75" screen.
