Temporary Lock during Playback and recording

I will admit that I'm new to this, and I'm desperate for help. During Playback, and sometimes record mode in Vegas Audio, I can't get 10 seconds back of audio before my systems hangs. Everything hangs by the way. Time, audio, usage meter: EVERYTHING. Very Frustrating. I have a stout computer: dual p3 800s, 386 mb ram, 40 gig Dr 7200 rpm. Not a great internal sound card, but I'm running everything out to my tascam usb mixer device. No effects on the tracks when I'm playing back. Already tried adjusting buffer on every setting imaginable. It seems hopeless. Can someone help me?

By the way, I'm running W2K. If that makes a difference.

The only way I know how to enable DMA is through the device manager. I go into IDE controllers, and select DMA if available. I'm running W2k and yes, I have all the updates on Direct X. Thanks

I selected DMA if available, and after I reboot, it still says PIO mode. What gives?
