Terrible Resolution

Kahuna wrote on 12/2/2010, 6:03 AM
Any suggestions (links) on improving resolution throughout the build process? I've attempted to build a slide show from digital stills, however, when I go from the active Media Bin to an active Time line I seem to loose clarity in the Video Preview window (even though I have the Preview set at Best, Auto). Then, when I render and create the DVD, the final product looks terrible! I've tried to resize my jpg's, however, it has no effect going from the Bin to Time line to the final DVD.

Just to clarify, you do realize that the finished DVD is only going to be 720x480 (or 720x576 if you're in PAL-land), no matter what you put on the timeline, right?

Kahuna,

It would help to know your Project Settings, Render Settings & pixel size of your stills.

Average size of jpg's: 2.5MB's
Project Prop: HDV 1080-60i, 1440x1080,29.970 fps
DVD Arch. Studio, Project Video Format: NTSC 720x480
Hope that helps!

Sorry, another piece of the puzzle:
Render Type: .avi
Template: NTSC SD YUV

If your final product is DVD, there is no reason to do the project at HDV resolution. Unless you are mixing in video, this is just another variable that will mess with your final renders.

What's the best option for Project Properties in the Video Preview pallett? Which ever one I select there is always a difference when toggeling (activating) between the Media bin or Time Line. Seems like which ever mode I'm in, the Video Preview resolution should be identical.

For a project like this you should have the properties set to match the intended output. If that's widescreen DVD then choose the NTSC widescreen template.

Above the preview window is a pulldown menu for preview quality. Try setting this to good/full. Right-mouse-button click on the preview image and from that popup menu deselect Ajdust size and quality for optimal playback.

Kahuna,

Making a couple of assumptions:
1) You're final product is a SD 4:3 DVD
2) There is no embedded video in the DVD (i.e. just a series of stills).

Here's what I'd suggest:
1) New Project with the "NTSC DV (720x480, 29.970 fps)" template
2) Drop your stills in the timeline (btw, what is the resolution of your stills? e.g. 1024x768).
3) Render to the "Video for Windows -> NTSC DV" template
4) Drop the resultant AVI in DVDA using the NTSC 4:3 template & Burn your disc.

Test this with a half dozen stills first (or render a short loop region) because another possibility (for poor quality) - your full render may be too big (and DVDA reduces the quality to get a fit the DVD).

Good Luck!
