@janndk

VEGAS Image has extremely niche usages in the workflow of video editing. Nothing to write home about. And I've been a beta tester of its parent software for years.

The main reason GIMP/Photoshop/Affinity Photo will remain superior has mainly to do with its principle.

It is a Non-Destructive Image editor. You literally cannot, under any circumstances, destroy any pixel no matter what you do on it. Its GPU relying engine is incredibly powerful. It can recover details of overexposed images unlike any other software in the market.

All impressive - if you're a full time photographer or someone who does a lot of image compositing.

Beyond that - I'd just recommend Affinity Photo.

I go through these details in this video.

@Former user, the link is in VP19 and a part of it's context menu whether you have HF or not. There is certainly one way to find out, install VP20 trial.

I'm not ready to install the trial yet.

@Reyfox 😁 Not until the Boris Fx Editor is fixed, & from the sounds of things i'm not missing much by not upgrading so haven't bothered with the trial 😁

Thanks for your comment and video @Mohammed_Anis 😃👍

PS.
I already use Affinity Photo 👍

Reyfox wrote on 8/20/2022, 6:05 AM

@janndk do you have Happy Otter Scripts? They have this nifty feature called OpenPhotoEditor so you can continue to use Affinity and "incorporate" it into your Vegas workflow.

@Reyfox Hi, I didn't know that, I've wanted a link to open a photo editor from Vegas 👍 From the description in that link you posted i presume that would work with GIMP?

PS, I don't quite understand this site,https://tools4vegas.com/get-a-license/ It says Free licence for OpenPhotEditor but only offers a Free Trial unless you pay for one of the Paid License Options 🤷‍♂️

Reyfox wrote on 8/20/2022, 11:32 AM

@Former user I have the paid full version, only @wwaag can comment on the "Free License" and what it is about. I use Paintshop Pro 2022, and it will transfer the image to it from the Vegas timeline. I have to save it in PSP f(Ctrl s), and once that is done, while PSP is still open, I click on HOS window Editing is Completed in Vegas, and it sends it back to Vegas. I choose to have it go to the track above or replace. Easy.

It should work with GIMP also. When you set OpenPhotoEditor, you point it to which editor (.exe) file you want to be executed. Easy as that.

'Happy Otter' how do you know when an Otter is happy? 🤔🤷‍♂️😂

@Former user

No need to purchase HOS or even get a trial license. Just run setup, launchHelp, click on Activate and enter "FREE" into the serial number dialog. The free tools, including OpenPhotoEditor, can then be used. There is another free script, ExternalApps that opens any external application including the option to use the media file for the first selected event as the argument.

@Former user, @wwaag is happy all the time! Download and try it. It works the same with editing music/sound in another software. I use KwikPreview all the time. But once you start exploring.....

There is some overlap with Vegasaur, but I have both.

@wwaag @Reyfox Thanks, I think i must be doing something wrong or it's my version of GIMP, I've tried a few options & different pics

Reyfox wrote on 8/20/2022, 4:44 PM

@Former user, I am using Paintshop Pro 2022. And what I do with a photo, it will transfer back to Vegas. I will have to download GIMP and give it a try, but it will have to wait until Monday.

I just tried it again, and it works. I made changes to an image, did Ctrl s and then went back to Vegas and ticked Add to new track, and there is was.

@Reyfox I use a version called Parthas GIMP, it's basically the same except there's some plugins that can be added in reg GIMP, those can be difficult to install but Partha's done it for you, opening the program is also faster than regular GIMP, I like the Heal selection tool in Resynthesizer in Parthas version https://www.partha.com/

wwaag wrote on 8/20/2022, 7:08 PM

@Former user

I think I see your problem. When you did a Save (ctrl-s), it writes to a file with a .xcf extension (presumably a gimp format?). Instead, try the overwrite option which saves it in the original file format (usually jpg, png or psd). When you use OPE, you are editing a copy of the original file--not the original file itself.

@Former user

Just tried in Vegas and it works OK. I simply flipped the image in Gimp and saved using the overwrite option. Here's a screengrab of the two timeline tracks.

Excellent, just removed the preview screen window

Click overwrite instead of save, this is just a screen grab so i don't care about it but that Happy Otter created a copy instead, the orig is still as is & Add to a new track inserted the pic as expected, Thankyou 😁😁👍👍

PS, if anyone's interested, this is 2 of the plugins added in the Partha version, loads of 'stuff' in these

Former user wrote on 8/21/2022, 8:40 AM

@wwaag Just thought i'd share that I've got OpenPhotoEditor to use as opening GIMP but using ExternalApps also lets me open the file in Boris Optics 👍 best of both worlds 😁

Reyfox wrote on 8/21/2022, 1:07 PM

@Former user plenty of useful features. I like HOS because it sped up my editing. Yes, it's an additional cost to Vegas, but it's a timesaver in many aspects and was worth the purchase.

@Former user, yes, try out what it (or any) plugin offers during the trial period! And what is good about HOS is that @wwaag is open to suggestions and is always around to help with it.
