Generally speaking, you can accomplish a lot of the text effects using key frames and overlaying once piece of text over another. However there are no predefined text effects in SVMS to acomplish the exact same effects in the example "Did You Know" video.
Looking on the bright side, key frames can be very slick once you get the hang of them. It was tricky for me to figure them out until I broke down and bought a book on SVMS.
When learning to work with key frames its easier to work backward in time
So at the point in time when you want the text to appear place the CTI ,right click make a key then go back to the start reposition and resize and that’s your start key
If you need I can make a vf file and e-mail it to you to start you off
I've been using SVMS since April 209 and, in my opinion, the book/video is an excellent resource. I learned a lot about SVMS in general and in particular I figured out how key frames work.
I paid about $56 for the video and maybe $25 for the book (I bought them separately). You might be able to shop around and get a better price. I feel as if I got my money's worth. The video is nice because it gives you instant, on-line type training. The book is good because you can flip the pages without needing your computer.
Before buying these materials I'd never heard of Douglas Spotted Eagle. I gather that he is a Guru in the digital video world in addition to being a musician and outdoor enthusiast.

I recently purchased two excellent training pieces for Movie Studio. They have help me a lot and I can see myself progressing to the next level with my little videos. I think other new users will also find these materials helpful:
Sony Vegas Movie Studio Training (DVD)
By Douglas Spotted Eagle. This DVD runs about 5-hours and takes you from the beginning to the end of a basic project. I learned at least a dozen things I did not know before, so it was money well spent.
Instant Vegas Movie Studio + DVD (Paperback Book)
By Douglas Spotted Eagle and John Rofrano
This book isn't written as a companion to the above video, but it functions very well as one. The advantage I have with this book is that I can look-up techniques quickly rather than put my DVD in and search for the topic. The book also devotes a chapter to using ACID for music composition.
These items are available at vasst.com, Barnes & Noble, Powells, etc. I am not affiliated with vasst.com or DSE. But I wanted to recommend these items because I learned a lot and I think other new users may benefit as well.

Yes, "Spot" has long been one of Vegas' biggest cheerleaders and advocates. He posts on these forums as "DSE" (his initials), though more often in the Pro forum than here in VMS land (but he does show up here as well).
He has long been a very active skydiver (& skydive videographer) but last year suffered a near-fatal skydiving event, so the subsequent recovery and rehabilitation have reduced his activity on the forums here.
John Rofrano posts here (mainly on the Pro forums) as JohnnyRoy.
One of the easiest ways to get "fancy effects" with your text is use the video transition effects that you would normally use when overlapping two video clips.
Just overlap your text boxes and choose which effect to add ... easy .. and quite effective.
