Here's a very very simple description that should get you started. You may eventually get into much more complex projects, but this is the basics to begin with:

- Place your video clip on track 2.

- Add a text event to track one. Under Media Generators / Text, choose one of the templates with a "checkerboard" background. The checkerboard means the background is transparent and the video will show through behind the lettering.

- Edit the text, pick font and text. Under the Placement tab you can move the text around. Under the properties tab you can change the color or make the text itself semi transparent.

And be sure to turn on the safe-area indicator -- the little grid icon just above the Preview Window -- so you're sure to position your text within the safe text area -- the innermost box.

To insert the Text tool, right click on the track were you want to place the text, and choose “Insert Text Media…”

. . better yet! Scrub holding down the right meece button. You have a HIGHLIGHTED area. Now right click within that area and select from the Pop up menu the "Insert Text Media" and you have your text event filling the exact area you scrubbed/wanted! Neat eh?
