text overlaying video

~in VMS to get some text to fade in and out right over top of video that's playing i put it in the text overlay track and pull down the opacity until the text appears nicely. then i put a little fade ot the beginning and end of each bit of text. the problem is that because the text is on colored backdrop such as black. the brightness of the video it's fading in on top of goes dim because the opacity is also letting in the black. so for each time a title fades in the video goes dull. it would be real tedium to try to adjust the brightness of the video to counteract the dark background in an attempt to keep the video appearing consistent,

is there a better way to get text to fade in and out over top of video without affecting the video's brightness?

If I have not misunderstood your question, the following might be good:

In a track over your video drag and drop "Media Generators" + "Text" + "Default Text".
This gives a 0-100% solid text on a 0-100% transparent background.

Exactly. Make sure you pick the text preset with the checkerboard background. The checkerboard indicates transparency.

i just clicked on the "styles" tab and pulled down the alpha all the way into the checkerboard! i had always wondered what the checkerboard was all about : )
