The day Vegas (sort of ) broke

Hi all,

I'm currently working on a mixed V13 project consisting of some stopmotion jpg series and 30-40 around 20 sec DNxHD 145 clips, some track motion and quite a lot of FX, mainly NB Colorfast.

All went pretty smooth until that one clip could not be played. I imported it, took it to the trimmer and it only showed a white background with strange black and blue grid lines.( I later realized that's the audio display ) On the timeline, the clip only showed audio tracks. ( I tried playing it on its own in VLC, no problem). From there on, the whole project went haywire. V13 stopped reacting, wouldn't close down. Restarting win7 and V13, it started loading but hung several times at 33% and wouldn't load the project any further, not even after around 30 minutes of waiting.

Slight panic creeping in ( 5 days of work), tried .bak versions, as well as other saved versions - same thing. It eventually loaded the project in about 1 of 4 times, with no obvious clues as to why or why not, so the project does not seem corrupted to the point of being unloadable.

On to V14, (which I honestly still kinda avoid...) It loads the project easier and a bit faster, but has a critical moment at 33% too, but gets it 4 of 5 times. It occasionally stops at 33% and seems to endlessly work on some background op. It also won't load that special clip, but it can be imported into V13 and V14 on a fresh empty project witthout a problem.

V13 never ever collapsed on me that badly, and I wonder if either the DNx files or the installation of V14 have somehow messed with it. Any ideas what could be happening here?

Thanks!

what are you using with the dnxhd files? quicktime? try checking the version. i thought 14 didn't need quicktime - but i could be wrong.

i found working with dnxhd a bit hit and miss. went to xavc-i and never looked back.

of course, you might well have a bad clip throwing the project out. next time it loads try saving 'sections' and see if they load independently.

Thanks ushere, will try that. So far the project works again, I continued and finished it on V14. My installed QT is 7.7.9. Did you notice a difference from XAVCi to XAVC-S? I have a feeling Vegas isn't too happy with my Sony a7s` XAVC-S.

wouldn't dream of using -s (long gop). -i is intraframe so is much easier on the system and with a range of bitrates, etc., to match dnxhd.

iirc i was using 7.7.2 - but have since taken off quicktime from all my pc's.

OK thanks, afaik I can easily transcode to XAVCi in Sony Catalyst.

that's what i've been using too.

Keet having masive problems. V14 suddenly said " there was a problem opening the file..." and wouldn't load certain clips that had been fine before. Then more crashes / freezes etc etc.

Then, all of a sudden, clips disappear from the timeline, leaving empty events.

I uninstalled quicktime but V14 needs it to open DNxHD.

I'm seriously running out of patience with Vegas I have to admit.

internal or external drive? check if you have hard drive issue. Overheating cpu is next to check.

i'd transcode the dnxhd. when i started using resolve i used dnxhd as my intermediary but found that veg 13, and the trial version of 14 both hic-cupped at times, and the more files i opened the more the hic-cups increased.

has always been my opinion that quicktime and its codecs are best suited to mac, where, when i worked on macs, they performed as expected.i could say the same of prores too.

Thanks to all,

all on a brandnew internal 3T drive. I strongly suspect DNxHD to be the issue, it's my first DNx project, Vegas has never ever behaved like this in 6 over years. It now refuses to make thumbnails on certain clips, and only shows a black trimmer window, keeps saying some clips are audio only, hangs on "background operations" etc.

As ushere says, the more clips I import the worse it gets.

What should I transcode them to with as little loss as possible? Is there any alternative to Quicktime?? How come DNxHD still relies on such a problematic third party software?

DNxHD was developed by Avid which was primarily a Mac Based edit system. (they have windows versions but were developed originally as Mac). So it is QT based.
