I have the same thing in PhotoPaint dand have wondered about that seeming contradiction/redundancy too. I just use whatever works best,

But it is also one of those little "Hmmm..." life questions :o)

Unsharp-masking is a more sophisticated process for sharpening images.

unsharp mask can have a bigger radius.

The 'unsharp' comes from the initial step which is a gaussian blur.
