The end of the road for Vegas Pro?

duckrabbit wrote on 3/29/2018, 7:04 AM

Hi, I run a production company (duckrabbit.info) and we've been using Vegas, happily, for the last 8 years. I was really pleased when Magix bought Vegas. 15 has turned into a disaster. Very, very long load times. A project took 15 minutes to open yesterday. It took 1 minute in a trial version of Vegas 14 running on the same computer. Undoing can take a long time. Same with copying and pasting across projects. 15 is taking up a lot more RAM. All this is to say as an editing programnme, and least on our computers (Ryzen, 16 GB RAM) it just isn't fit for purpose. And is getting LESS so with updates (windows and Vegas). I really hope Magix can sort this out but as things stand we will be moving to Premiere and advising all the people we train to do the same (or Final Edit if they are on MAC).

Don't bother start with another Vegas Dooms day rant, there is already enough going around.... Vegas Pro 15 does not behave like that for many users. Yes, Vegas 15 has its issues, but in your situation something installed on your system is causing some sort of conflict.... However, there was a previous memory leak that has been quickly corrected in a recent update, (build 321).

Hi Steve, I've run it on 3 different computers and a laptop. Different set ups, with and without plugins, with and without a fresh install of Windows and on none of them is it fit for professional editing, I say that as someone who has been recommending Vegas for many years. All those computers run 14 no drama. So yeah maybe Vegas 15 can't handle the files from the FS5 camera. Or maybe some windows update is causing problems. Any which way the software has gone backwards. I can't imagine many people doing professional work on it. Super happy to be proved wrong.

@duckrabbit

Just curious, are you using the latest build? I am just now testing v15 (build 321) and finding it at least as stable as 14 - so far. Earlier builds did have problems for me.

duckrabbit, are you using (build 321) to do these tests you mentioned?

Hi Kinvermark and Steve, I've tried different builds. 15 has always been a bit less fluid for us (coming from 13 but I like the new look). Laggy when trying to undo or copy and paste from one project to another. Footage from the Mavic Pro drone didn't work so we updated to the latest two builds on two different computers. No criticism of Magix for that. They were quick to sort the problem. The major problems have come this week working on both the last two builds. It's become unusable for us. Haven't gone back to the first 15 build because I know it doesn't work with Mavic footage. My thinking is that it has something to do with a Windows update. I did a roll back and that didn't solve the issues. As I say we downloaded 14 trial and are having no issues. This is my frustration. Fine in 14, unworkable in 15. And I know I'm not the only one. I have to say Magix response has been the killer for me. They don't deny there's an issue but haven't offered any solution. I suggested they give us a license for 14 so at least we can work on that version until 15 is stable on our systems. They said no. As someone who runs a business I am perplexed by this. It seems like really helpful people in the forum are keeping the software going.

@Kinvermark good to know you have stability.

I just read through the comments on Vegas 15 latest updates. Seems like a lot of people in the same position. This is really sad place to find what has been an excellent bit of software. I'm sure the team are working hard but probably there are not the resources needed.

Which comments? Can you post a link (or two)? Thanks! (I am cautious and won't move from 14 to 15 until I am confident.)

@duckrabbit Be sure you are running build 321, then please confirm that your Mavic Pro footage is being decoded by the older compoundplug.dll plugin, not the newer so4compoundplug.dll. That should happen automatically for DJI footage in recent builds of VP15 because of performance issues. Details here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/avc-xavc-s-issues-in-vp15-try-disabling-so4compoundplug-dll--108345/

@nickhope Yes we went to build 321 when the Mavic footage wasn't playing properly. It was working fine then last week everything went to pot. We followed your instructions to stop the newer plugin. Load times went crazy. Like fifteen minutes for a project with the drives working overtime on one computer! I thought there must be a problem with the mirror on our drives so I broke it, but that wasn't the issue. By the way I really appreciate all the effort you put into helping people.

@Kinvermark have a read of this thread. I wish I had before I upgraded! https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-15-update-4-build-321--110654/

Wrong again. It's not a new update. Sorry, my bad. Here is the feedback and its not pretty https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-15-update-4-build-321-general-discussion--110655/?page=7

@duckrabbit Could you possibly share sample original files from the cameras that are causing you trouble, on a cloud service such as Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, mega.nz, wetransfer.com or mediafire.com? They will reach and help the developers who are currently working hard on better format support.
