The GPU saga

Hi Guys, I am a newbie in here and I am a registered moron. Only occasionally do my two brain cells meet in orbit. I upgraded to Vegas Pro 11 and immediately rushed out to buy a Gigabyte HD6850 card and had the local computer guys install it in my machine. I have hit a couple of problems and I wondered since I can see this forum has people who know what they're doing, if you could answer some really moronic questions.

I have 2 x Samsung monitors and they are both connected by DVX (I think thats the term). While I don't see any significant improvement in reproduction quality over what was there before, I have noticed that the replay speed has gone down. Whereas with version 10, I could use a preview to observe my material in lowish res to check synch etc, in this version, I have been reduced to draft, and it is like trying to chase a squirrel up the road with a bull whip!

The other issue I have had is the displays suddenly lose contrast - By this I mean in the video display in Vegas, not the whole display.. (I seem to have discovered that if I convert my project properties to 32 bit then this problem goes away). On a couple of other occasions, when working in 32 bit, I get the reverse problem, so much contrast that it is very cartoon like, and by going to 8 bit, the problem is solved. I generally just work around these things as I can be very persistent and will usually kick any part of the wall until it falls on me. I shoot on Panasonic P2 and use DVFilm codecs. I have also found that when finishing a project, I tend to render to Sony MXF and use that as the base for producing DVDs. The system was crashing at about 34 minutes into the render (Not on screen time, but actual time) and I wondered if this wasn't related to the fact that in my power setting on my computer, I have a 30 minute monitor sleep function to save power. By setting this to never before I render this problem seems to go away, but I am wondering if I was just lucky, or stupid (Which is a strong possibility).

I run Windows 7 - 64, Have 32Gb Ram, 16Tb hard drive space, and i7 board and lots of enthusiasm. Do you have any suggestions? (I thought of jumping off a bridge but the bridges nearby are too low and I would only hurt myself, and recovering in our local hospital would ensure a long and painful death, thus negating the initial action). Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

And if any of you chaps (Not a gender specific term) need any pics from my side of the pond, just holler. (I am in Grahamstown, South Africa)

Chances are that the store tech installed the drivers from the DVD in the box, or worse yet, he used the default drivers from Windows 7. And, chances are that you don't have the latest drivers for the card. Go here:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3614#dl

Also, if the store tech did you a "favor" of overclocking the video card, then reset it (and the PC) back to stock settings. Never overclock until you are completely satisfied with your system's performance.

What's good for games is sometimes counter-productive for video editing.
