Is there a way to make this default to off? I woke up this morning to find a pile of emails in my inbox telling me about new responses to topics i had posted in. That'll get real tired real fast. So today i'm making sure i uncheck that box every time i post, but i'd rather have it unchecked for me.

You can go to my profile –> settings –> Email message to and uncheck every box where you think you don't want emails.

With respect, that doesn't really solve it. I only want to follow a small fraction of the posts that I make or comment on, but for those posts I really do want an email notification. Your solution is an "all or nothing" on email alerts. Please give us a toggle to switch "I want to follow this post" off by default.
The e-mail notification for this has been changed with topic name added. Now much better. - Well, the forum still evolving. Thank you Vegas web forum developers from Magix.
The checkbox is now off by default.
