the pleasantvill look... selective coloring

dieradiodie wrote on 1/19/2004, 10:46 PM
How can I create a mask that is in a customized shape? For example... I am using archival footage that is in black and white one of my shots is of a traffic light... I would like to color just the 'red' light (circular shape) and keep everything in black and white?

Can this be done inside of Vegas 4?

thanks in advance

I too, am trying to accomplish the same thing. I have some footage with a bouquet of roses and would like just one rose to be red. Any suggestions as to how this can be done would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response... I believe that this will help eejackson...

Is there a way to do this whn the original footage starts in Black in white...

Id ultimately like to draw a custom mask.

I guess I should do it in Photoshop... I was hoping on doing it all in vegas...

Id it starts out B&W different issues. For the red traffic light assuming the shot is stationary, grad a frame of it, take into PS, draw red light on another layer, switch off original layer, save as PNG, bring it Vegas on upper track and done.

Colorising B&W is a BIG job. Needs to be rotoscoped and / or a whole range of complex software let loose on the thing. Way out of my league and even the pros get variable results. If you just want to add colour, nothing vaguely natural, well heaps of tricks to do that.

Not sure about your footage, but if the light is not moving, and since you are working with a round object, this simple approach may work:

Track 1: Same as Track 3 (see below), then add Cookie Cutter Fx with Shape = circle, Method = Cut away section, Size = whatever it needs to be to cover the red light
Track 2: Generated media of solid red (adjust to exact color and opacity needed)
Track 3: Original black and white footage

Everything will be the same black and white except the area showing through the Cookie Cutter, which will be as red as you want it. Hope this helps.

Also, if it only moves a little, you can do some keyframing with the cookie cutter to have the color move with the light. A bit tedious...

The circle cut out will work for that one shot... unfortunately not all the shots are as simple as a circle...

I guess I'll just have to do in photoshop...

Vegas Developers.... In next release please add the ability to draw masks (a feather for them would be nice too)

Thanks everyone...

It's already there. Use a gradient, or combination of gradients.
There are also 2 color pass veg files on the Sundance site.

True, the gradients are nice but nothing would beat being able to load the cookie cutter, grab a pencil icon and draw your mask around an object!

This is WAY easier if you shoot color to start with. Make the rose/object/whatever some wierd color that nothing else in the footage is. Use the secondary color correcter to desaturate all but (the wierd color.) Then change it to the desired color. It's kinda-sorta like chroma keying but you don't make it transparent.

I hear ya... But I am working with archive footage from the 50's.
