*The Vanishing Vegas Black Magic Trick*

Vegas does a disappearing act as soon as I try and view an HD Black Magic clip. After some struggles--and with help from the forum, I got my system to view Black Magic HD files. But now when I try and view those files in Vegas, it crashes. No error message, nothing. Just vanishes from the desktop.

The files I received from the lab are AVI (23.97 FPS) but only play in Quick Time 6.5, 7, and Premiere Pro (albeit not anywhere near real-time) so that might have something to do with it.

Vegas allows me to drag the files onto the timeline, but crashes as soon as I click on the file to view. Same thing happens if I preview from Explorer tab or open in Trimmer. Like I said, they work in Premiere Pro. I tried to change preview settings, used different project templates, changed ram settings, and anything that I could think of. But there seems to be something more sinister at work.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Vegas 6.0b.

Thanks.

Unfortunely, yes and it has happen with QT7 files and a few other unique avi sizes. files load up, but dies instantly when played, no error or warnings. I suspect its the codec's killing vegas in its execution.

Oh awesome! I get to use Premiere Pro then.

I wonder why Adobe can manage to deal with QT7 and unique AVIs and Vegas can't?

Thanks for the info.

Have you talked to Sony support?

Honestly, no. It took them over 3 weeks to reply to my last issue (print to tape problem) and it's still not resolved. The reply I got was a generic form message "sorry for the delay... we are busy with the new release... please reinstall" sort of message.

Even if they can't fix a bug, you would at least like to get the feeling they are actually aware of it.

Not so good support from Sony - but I'll try it again.

Please describe the files a little further- what exact BMD codec version, frame size, total file size etc.

Dont feel bad--I just got a response ---and my query was emailed on May 22---I guess we have reached the point where the cliche, "better late then never" is now in play.

ForumAdmin,

I have 5 clips and they range from 2 to 5 gigs each.
Video (according to Vegas):
1920x1080x20, 23.976 fps progressive, 00:00:15.25, BlackMagic 10 bit YUV Codec

As soon as I drag the event to the timeline, Vegas vanishses.

I also upgraded to SP2.

Thanks.

UPDATE:

This might be of use to anyone that has problems playing back 1080p film-sourced footage with the Black Magic Codec -- I think:-) (I've also opened a trouble ticket with Sony support)

Basically, Vegas would crash as soon as I tried to view a BM HD clip. Today, I stumbled upon a workaround. It seems that Vegas DOES work with these files only after I open an old existing project first, then choose File>New Project (1080 60i in this case)

I think it also has something to do with the Preview window settings for Full or Auto and its size. If I open a 1080i project and with the preview window set relatively small, if I choose Auto, Vegas crashes. If I set it to Full, then it works okay. To test this, I changed the size of the preview window to very small, still crashes on Auto. However, if I maximize the preview window all of the way then choose auto, it's fine. However, if I change the size of the preview window when it's in the Auto mode, Vegas crashes. So this seems to be a problem of the preview window settings, its size, and the Full or Auto mode.

Fun!
