This is how to delay menu items

There is alot of mention on here of delaying menu items, and I have stumbled onto a reliable way which allows for motion menus and un-interupted audio.

Here's how it works...

You have to use a "mask" created in Vegas which acts as a script file. A mask is a file that uses color intensity to controll the transparancy of an image. An all black mask makes your immage completely transparant, and all white makes it completely visible... and combinations of the two (fades/shapes/gradients) are how you vary the transparancy, and are completely up to you.
The mask will not cover the text generated for the thumbnail by DVDA, so you'll have to re-render your thumbnail in Vegas with any text wanted using the media generator.
The mask I created was a simple Black/White/Black fade created with Vegas' media generator. Drop in a black segment for the ammount of time you need to have the thumbnail transparant, cross into white for the duration you would like your immage visible, and back into black when you would like it to dissapear again.
Once this file is created, render it to a MPEG2 File. (this should take no time at all since it's a simple image)
In the button properties, you place the file you want as the thumbnail image in the "Frame" field. (I've tried the dedicated thumbnail field, and the mask doesn't work as expected)
Place your "mask" file you just rendered in Vegas in the "Frame Mask" field and set the "style" to "animated".
Last, Set the "button style" to "image only" to get rid of the pesky text, and you're good to go.

I know this is not a "true delay", but temporarily invisible is good enough for me...

To see Sony's miniscule documentation on masks in DVDA, follow this link: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/DVDArchitect2NewFeatures.pdf Search for masks, and it BRIEFLY steps you through how they work.

I would appreciate any feedback you have if you've actualy tried this method, of have found a way to improve on it...

Happy Rendering,
Brian

Just an update... In order to anamate the mask, you need to be maskinbg an animated file. So... If you're using still immages, you must still render them in vegas as a video of the same length as the mask....

I know this is involved, but it seems to be working for me.
