In trying out the demo of Vegas 4, I noticed that when one scrolls down in the media bin the images always have to redraw. Do any seasoned users here find this as frustrating as I expect it would be? I have little doubt that Vegas is best-in-class software in most important ways, but this particular omission with respect to basic UI design has me wondering if the software misses the other "little things" that contribute to speed and ease of use.
Now, here are the thoughts going through my head. As a mere prospective buyer with little experience with this kind of tool I'm fully prepared to be shown I'm wrong but I wonder:
Did the designers try out the software and decide that waiting 10 seconds every time one scrolls down the media bin window really wasn't that big a deal? Did they even consider providing the option to save thumbnails for instant recall? If so, why did they dismiss this option?
Where a computer can't do things instantaneously because of the state of technology, such as crunching through vast amounts of data to perform rendering, it's "forgivable" because the computer is being used to its full capability, one can ask no more of it. But when it comes to something like pressing a page-down button and having a long delay before the page displays, the technology is not being taxed to the limit; it's all down to the UI design.
Computers are great, but they are often extremely frustrating to use because of the disconnect between user input and the response of the software. People want software to be as much like an electric light as possible- flip the switch and it goes on instantly. In this case, I think Vegas can come much closer to such an ideal.
I think I'd trade a bunch of fancy transition graphics for the ability to fly through editing rather than cursing at the computer for always having to re-re-re-generate display data that has already been calculated once.
Or maybe I'm wrong. If so, please school me.
