Prompted by Chienworks' comments about not using the media pool, I thought I'd have a look for a thumbnail browser that can handle video. So far I haven't found anything that can handle DV straight from the camera - does anyone know a program that can?
There are a number of viewers that can handle avi (and mpeg), so I got the Canopus converter and converted a few dv clips to MS AVI type 2. I was surprised how much smaller the converted files were, about half the size - by the time you render to a DVD MPEG-2, is there any noticeable difference in quality?
If anyone's interested, 3D Browser Light looks promising. It can't produce thumbnails from DV , and it insists on MPEG rather than MPG as an extension, but it's free. If you pay the $9 to upgrade to the ad-free version you also get the ability to order the thumbnails in any order you choose - a simple form of storyboarding. That done, you can drag & drop the selected clips, in the right order directly onto the timeline in VF.
