Time lapse: How to shoot for it?

If I want to film the sunrise from right before the morning twighlight up through about an hour, how do I need to set the camera up for this? Do I allow the camera to go full auto, do I set the exposure and then adjust periodically during the course of the hour?

Also, I do not have a time lapse setting on my HVR-A1u. I would just have to film and go from there.

Thanks,

Don't adjust it manually, ever. It will stick out like a sore thumb poked in your eye when you speed it up. Ideally it should be left at a constant fixed exposure the whole time. The problem is, it's the end of the sunrise that is the exposure you want to set for. If your camera lets you see the settings and then enter them in again, find the right exposure some day at the end of the sunrise, then the next day set up your camera at that exposure before it starts.
