Time Limit?

I realize there is only 4.7gb of space on a single layer dvd....but is there a time limit for the DVDA3 to encode?

Example: Roxio EMC7 will drop the encoding on a, say, 6gb project to make fit on a 4.7gb disc. However, whatever the project 's file size may be, it must be 2 hours or less in total running time.

Does DVDA3 react similar?

No, there is no restriction like that. If you set DVD-A to encode at the lowest setting it lets you set (0.190 Mbps), you could fit ~24 hours on a single disc. Of course it would be unwatchable...

Using 2-pass encoding, I was able to get reasonably watchable video from 3+ hours of final day Masters golf, captured live over the air. However, golf is exceptionally well-suited to this, and really takes advantage of 2-pass encoding, because there are long stretches of almost no movement (as when the golfer lines up the put), and the encoder can really use very few bits, but then use the "saved" bits later on, when the golfer takes a full swing.

With more normal video, I generally start to notice degradation as soon as I try to go beyond about one hour and twenty minutes on one single sided, single layer DVD (although the video is still plenty watchable up until you hit two hours).

Agreed, I've managed 3 hours of football, very well shot though, camera with 2/3" CCDs on big tripod. Only ugly bit was when the tripod was bumped. Note though, no cuts, no dissolves etc.

Agreed. Encoding at low bitrates makes dissolves look really ugly.
