timecode on timeline thumbs broken in v12?

MikeLV wrote on 2/11/2015, 10:35 AM
Is this feature broken in Version 12? The last time I used it was on Version 10:

Options | Preferences | Video | Show source frame numbers on event thumbnails as, and I set it to timecode.

However, when I drop a clip on the timeline that I started filming at 10:48AM, the display on the thumbnail says 1;12 I checked the time and date on the camera and it is correct. Does anyone else have this problem with version 12 build 770?

I think it depends whether Vegas can read the file correctly. For example, files from my old Z5U are read correctly, from the AX100 not and I end up with the clip start and end time; meaning 0,00 and 1.21 for example.

It can't be the files or the camera because this is the same camera that I've been using. I actually was told about this option when I was trying to establish a workflow for working with AVCHD footage and being able to paper/pencil log edits to be made. I had been used to shooting with miniDV tapes wherein the time on the tape matched up with the time on the timeline so as long as you placed your clip at 0:00. But with AVCHD, it's different since there's no tape. The timecode fix was fine for me because I could just record time of day edits in my log, then be able to jump right to those places in the timeline quickly. It was working in version 10, doesn't seem to be working in version 12.

@Mike

Have a look at the source file from the camera with MediaInfo. If you can see something like "Start Time: UTC..." and "End Time: UTC..." then Vegas can read it correctly, if not, no luck as far as VP13 goes and probably VP12.

I don't see anything about start and end time in MediaInfo, using View -> Tree =(
This is really strange because the timecode fix is what I was using, now it suddenly does not work..

Do you have an original HDV file you can check with MediaInfo? I checked my AX100 files and none has the Start and End in it hence Vegas doesn't show it. My Z5U HDV files do have it and Vegas does show it correctly.

Maybe its the way the files have been transferred to the computer? I have no prove of that, just and idea.

I'm not sure, maybe it could be the way I'm importing but I can't imagine it would be because I'm using the Device Explorer to import. I like Vegas's Device Explorer because it automatically joins AVCHD files.

Do you still have VP10? Does it work with the same file that doesn't work in VP12?

Well then as a test, try dragging the first chunk of a scene directly to the timeline and see if it is different.

I don't have version 10 anymore.. tried dragging an MTS file from explorer on the memory card onto the timeline and same thing, doesn't show time of day code anymore.
OldSmoke wrote on 2/11/2015, 8:40 PM
I just dragged a 1080 60i mts file from a HXR-NX5U on the time line and it does show the recording time correctly despite the earlier mentioned START and END is missing when looking at the file with MediaInfo... go figure.

Edit:
1080 60p MTS from Canon HF-G30 is working too.

I just tried it with a DV .AVI file, an HDV .MTS file and an AVCHD .m2ts file with Vegas 9, Vegas 10, Vegas 12 and Vegas 13.

In all cases it showed the time and frame relative to the start of the clip.

I then looked at each file with MediaInfo.

The DV file under General had an entry "Recorded Date" which showed the correct time/date. Under Video it had an entry "Timecode of 1st frame" which showed 00:00:00:02, which doesn't make sense to me.

The HDV file under General had entries "Start time" and "End time" with correct time/date values. There were no timecode related entries under Video.

The AVCHD file had no timecode related enties at all.

So no version of Vegas that I tried displays time/date despite it being present in two of the files.

You are confusing timecode with datecode (recorded date/time).
The aforementioned option is called "Show source frame numbers..." (in the selected format)
This has nothing to do with the recorded date/time and Vegas never displayed this information.
MikeLV wrote on 2/12/2015, 4:12 PM
This is what I was originally told:

"some AVCHD camcorders will allow "free run" of timecode. In combination with using preset, this will allow the use of "time-of-day timecode". That is, the camera's timecode generator just runs and runs, whether you're recording or not. Anyone logging can use their watch as a timecode reference! (be careful with the camera's timecode preset, synchronize watches, etc.) Then, Vegas has some display options, It's Options | Preferences | Video | Show source frame numbers on event thumbnails as: | timecode, and, Thumbnails to show in video events: | All
This will show timecode as a tooltip-style overlay directly on timeline clips... zoom in and it will show frame by frame, if that's what you want"

It was a few years ago, but it worked at that time, in that version. I can't understand what has changed because it's the same video camera. only thing that has changed is the Vegas version.

However, the fact that Vegas is only showing the timecode, i.e. starting at 0:00 should be ok to work with too because instead of recording the time of day on my edits, I just need to log the time of the current file, and be sure that I keep all the files organized.
