The answer is really easy.
The one that takes 25 minutes is not recompressing the video, which means it is a compliant format and the right size to fit on your disc.

The one that is taking hours is being recompressed, either because it is not compliant and/or does not fit on the disc. As you have noticed, this is a terribly inefficient method of authoring a DVD.

It's happening when Page 2 (Menus) are rendering: I am using exactly the same setting for both files and menus. The MPG-2 file seems to be ok - it's when I create a sub-menu, everything seems to slow down even before I render.

Even to preview the menu screen, it takes a long time to appear. Never has happened before. I do this all the time.

I have narrowed it down to insertng scene selection menu (chapters set in Vegas Pro. As soon as I select the scenes, everything slows down.
