timing keyframed effects on a clip

I have a commercial I just did that was shot with a DSLR and had one quick pan that I needed to use. Since the DSLR shoots progressive and controls the exposure by using a really quick shutter rate, the pan of course looked juddery. No problem, I just added a little horizontal gaussian blur and key-framed it so that it came and went just when I needed it to mask the judder in the pan. It looks just fine now.

My problem is that setting the keyframe points was sort of a hit and miss random "lets try it here, and render it out to see if that's the right place" sort of affair.

My question is if there is some way to see make the curser in the keyframe move so that you can see where your points are as they relate to the timeline. So far I can't make that happen, but I'm almost sure I've done it (most likely by accident) in the past. Any advice?

Sure the first button at the bottom of FX window is used to sync the FX and the timeline. It's probably not been pressed... hover over it for pop-up

That was it! Thanks Tom. I knew it was something that was simple. :-)

It's the pan at 11 seconds:

It looked juddery as heck before I keyframed in the blur.

I was frustrated by the same thing until I pressed that button.
One wonders what the "reasoning" was behind making unsynced the default state.

I can think of two reasons off hand:

By default any change you make to the Event is applied to the keyframe at time 00:00:00.0. Therefore it is applied to the entire Event.

If you're working with overlapped Events, setting the Vegas cursor at the start of the Event displays the previous Event in the Video preview. That means you must place the Vegas cursor past the overlap point to preview the Event. If you make a keyframe change and sync is enabled, you'll have to move the keyframe back to the start of the Event to apply it to the entire Event.

Remember, this doesn't change how keyframes are applied once the dialog is open. It determines the location of the keyframe cursor when the dialog is opened up. Also, this setting is "sticky". It remains in whatever state you set it to. Personally, I usually keep it set to "Off".
