To Upgrade Or Not...

I've been following the threads regarding the issues/non-issues with VMS-11. I'm currently running VMS HD10 Platinum, and have had no problems what soever with crashes or lock ups, editing both SD and HD source material, and burning to DVD and BD. Although I love to tinker with new software as much as anyone, if I'm perfectly happy with what I've got, is there any compelling reason to make the upgrade? I also live in fear of Murphy's law, and my experiences with so many hardware/software changes is that once things are changed, they suddenly stop working!

Not unless you need the new features:

* 3D video editing
* More advanced Titling tool with more advanced keyframe workspace for creating text animations
* Revised Render As/Make Movie output workspace

Some personal considerations, if they can help.

1. It looks like the period from September to Xmas is a hot period where many SW houses try to churn out the new versions of their products to help people to make up some ideas about what to give as a XMas present...
Said this, it is anyway not guaranteed that Sony has VMS12 ready in the drawer... Sony's latest announcement so far is towards Vegas Pro 11. It could be that in case VMS12 will bring in substantial differences, they could use the same marketing strategy also for VMS...

2. Latest VMS11 update (build 247) was released a couple of months ago. I had some trouble with it, but after uninstalling the previous build 231 and re-installing the build 247, everything seems to work fine

3. The price fro VMS11 is quite cheap now, which sometimes (...many times?) means that the new version is just around the corner.
I would try to understand whether you can get a promo discount in case you buy VMS11 now and a new version comes out in a couple of months...

Conclusion: unless it is a matter of urgency, I would wait for a while. On the other side, if you need any of the added features, and you do not care too much to the 40 and some bucks(as in my case, because at the end it is no more than offering a pizza to a friend...), then get it.

or you want yet more titling from NewBlue as well as the NewBlueFX or much improved AVCHD playback in the preview (not render).

If you use AVCHD at all, you may find much smoother editing on the timeline due to the faster preview of clips.

If 10 is working fine and you don't need any of the features that 11 offers, I'd say pass and pickup some nice plugins. I passed on studio 11, and may pass on Pro 11 too.

Since I'm now doing a lot of AVCHD work, and am looking to do some more interesting titling (without having to learn a new complex program like Blender), and since Newegg has the whole VMS 11 Production Suite for under $90, I'm leaning towards the upgrade. If one goes ahead and migrates from VMS 10 to VMS 11, what's the safest way to do it....uninstall 10 and the install 11, or install 11 over 10? And can 11 open (and subsequently edit) projects that were begun on VMS 10?

The new Production Suite does not contain new versions of Sound Forge or DVD Architect. If your Platinum 10 included the Pro Pack, you don't need the 11 Production Suite.

That's a very interesting point....my VMS 10 DID include the ProPack, so I've got Sound Forge 10 and DVD Architect. So if I just upgrade to VMS HD 11 Platinum, I'll get the new features I need and save a few bucks? And will VMS HD 11 automatically know that DVDAS is installed, and then export projects to DVDAS when I want to "make disc" like it does now?

^^You shouldn't have problems with all Sony softwares with VMS11. One thing though; if you're using DVD-A 5.0 128Build, DO NOT UPGRADE to the 150Build, there is a bug where it doesn't recognized rendered AC-3 audio files. Sony acknowledged it and are fixing the problem.

Thanks much...I'm using DVDAS Build 128 with no problems, and will keep it that way.

Yes.
