This isn't a problem, this is intentional. Bars and Tone are required by all broadcasters and most replicators, which is why Vegas outputs them.
Turn tone off in the Print to Tape dialog when you print. Or, use the VidCap utility to print, and you won't have bars/tone.

Thanks, but the tone box is not checked in the Print to Tape dialog. I haven't had this problem previously. I wasn't clear in my original post; the tone accompanies the first few seconds of video, overriding the soundtrack.

Hmmm . .. " the tone accompanies the first few seconds of video, overriding the soundtrack." . .. NO, this shouldn't be happenning. Try another tiny tests with a NEW project, stick some media in it and see if you get the same.

Grazie

Just to make certain, you are doing PTT over firewire?
Bob.

I'm doing PTT over firewire. I should note that the first frame freezes for a few seconds. I don't have this problem with all of my projects, but I haven't been able to determine why it occurs with certain projects. I can eliminate the problem by including a 3 second leader section, but this isn't always feasible.
Thanks!

I think you should always have a leader. I don't think that DV decks are very capable of going into record cleanly, particularly if it's a blank tape. Don't know the details as to why it's so but I do know things like the SD Connect which will let you do an insert edit on a betacam deck do need a certain number of leader frames in front of what you send down the firewire connection for it to work right.
Why can't you include some form of leader, it's pretty standard to not go from blank tape straight into the first frame of program.
Bob.

Always in the past, I was able to print to tape without leader frames. On some projects, I do a rough edit to add a clip to a long clip already on tape. I do see your point, though, and I realize that my method isn't the most polished way to seque from one clip to another.
