Tons of dropped frames...

I just got vegas video 3.0c, and when i played the video on the computer it was fine but then when i tried to record there were like 49 dropped frames in a minute of footage. The card I have came with Ulead Video Studio, and the capturing seems to work fine in that although it doesnt say how many dropped frames, it certainly looks better. What can I do???

Make sure you have the latest directX drivers from windows update web site.
This is the number one cause...

I'm pretty sure i installed the new direct x the other day unless soemthing went wrong...but now im trying to install it again and it keeps not responding.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Oh also i realized it is dropping a lot of frames in Video Studio too. I'm going to try defragmenting. Any further help would be appreciated. thanks.

Type dxdiag in the run window. This will dislpay current directx driver.
It should be 8.1

Yeah, its 8.1. I defragmented my harddrive and when i went to try it, the camera wont even connect to the computer now. Could it have something to do with my card or my cable?

What operating system are you using?
If 2000
First plug the firewire into your camera.
and turn on your camera.
next, goto control panel>devices>hardware>device manager.
You should see imaging device loaded.
If not, have you loaded any new sofware lately?

If you have Windows2000:
Go into your WinNT\INF directory (you may have to set windows to show
this directory, as it's normally a hidden system directory).

Look for the following files:

customdv.inf
customdv.pnf

If you're not going to use the Avid software, delete them, otherwise,
just rename them by adding ".bak" on the end.

Now look for:

msdv.inf.1
msdv.pnf.1

Just rename them to;

msdv.inf
msdv.pnf

Now reboot your computer and when windows has finished loading, turn
on your DV camera. It should automatically be detected.

I have Windows ME, but it connected anyway once i shut it off, unplugged it then plugged it back in. But, the frame dropping problem still is going on. The firewire cable is kind of loose in both the camera and the computer. SHould i try taking the card out and putting it back in?

It's possible your card does not like to shae an IRQ.
Find out the IRQ from devide manager. write it down.
remove the cards driver from device manager, then immediately
power down your computer.
Remove the card and reboot your computer.
Now, power the computer back down, and reinstall the card.
Hopefully, it will select a different IRQ.
If it does not, try repeating this but also uninstall another card (remove driver first), possibly
your sound card along with your firewire card.
Reboot with both cards removed.
Power back down and install the firewire card again.
If your lucky, it might select the IRQ your sound card was using.
After you get the capture software to work. Reinstall you other crad you
removed (ex. sound card)

I've had to do this to fix drop frames on mine...
my firewire card does not like to share IRQ's..
