Toshiba Playback Problems

ScooterG wrote on 7/19/2003, 10:26 AM
In Vegas 4.0c, captured/rendered sister's home video to mpg2:DVD NTSC with no problems. Imported and burned DVD+RW (HP 200i) in DVDA 1.0c with no apparent problems. Burned disc plays fine in my Sony DVD player DVP-S530D. But when given to sister, refuses to play in her Toshiba SD-1600 (which is a fairly new model, from what I understand). Refuses to even show menu. Display reads "DISC ERROR".

Is there any perference adjustments or program fine-tuning I can do along the way to increase probabilty that it will play? Are +R's more compatible?

Though I've searched this forum for related topics, any links to technical references so I can better understand underlying technology is also appreciated. I've looked thru DVDfaq/DVDDeMystified.com.

Thanks to all in advance. This forum is a great resource!

I have the same problem with the Toshiba model. For some reason, Toshiba's don't like burned media of any kind which is very disappointing. I haven't experimented with this yet, but you may try playing around with burning the DVD using different file systems such as ISO, UDF, or the ISO/UDF bridge.

You might want to check:

www.dvdrhelp.com

They have a list of nearly all DVD players with reviews and ratings. You can also find out about disk compatibility (-R, +R, -RW, +RW). As far as I know, Toshiba players are -R and -RW and probably will not play +R/+RW.

Followup:

I just checked the site above for comments on the SD-1600. While most people report using -R and -RW with this drive, one user successfully made a +RW as follows:

"Works with DVD+RW, the trick is using HP's compatibility mode util and setting to Mode 2. Will try DVD+R as soon as I get more."

www.dvdrhelp.com is a great resource. I will try to set compatibilty bit to 2.

Thanks for the tip.

Hmmm. I have a Toshiba SDV280 and it is very new. It only plays -R/-RW, won't play +R/+RW.

Take a look here

http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html

After you have followed the intructions I bet you will get the +R/+RW discs playing in your Toshiba.

I've found that all the machines I encountered that wouldn't play my +R discs were Toshibas and after burning as ROM book type they worked fine

Thanks for the info. I went to the site, installed dvdbitsetter, and now I'm getting "blue screen" terminations on a dual Xeon XP workstation--never had 'em before in over 18 months of continuous up-time. Looks like I'll have to un-install the application, and just keep burning -R :=}

Sorry about that, actually I didn't mean you to install the dvdbitsetter app (actually I tried it on mine and it wouldn't make the change to my drive even though it is a Ricoh).

No I just use Nero to burn DVD Folder using ROM Book type. No permanent hardware/firmware changes needed.

I agree, set the Book Type to DVD-ROM and you should all set. I have to do this with my Toshiba 1200-SD to get it to recognize the DVD+R media. Plays just fine now.

I beleive the HP 200i firmware should allow you to set the Book Type. Also, as mentioned in this thread, Nero should also allow you to change the Book Type if it sees that your burner's firmware supports setting the Book Type (which I believe the HP 200I does allow). Some burners (like the multi-format SONYs) always write the Book Type equal to the media type (which is no help when it comes to compaibilty workarounds). Other players, like the Dell-branded NEC ND-1100A, always use a DVD-ROM Book Type when writing to DVD+R discs for increased compatibilty with older DVD video players.
