Absolutely. No doctor after Tom Baker was any good, but the new series (last year) was excellent. How is it that you know what the doctor is going to say on Christmas Day??

Well hello, Grazie
An dthanks for the info. At long last I know what the Dr Who thing is about. They have been airing the new series here during the autumn. Me and my 13 yr old daughter are loving it. The Christmas Day special will probably make here about Easter?

I noticed (another thread) that you were begging to come on an African journey. London that bad nowadays? Tell you what - go to Chelsea Physics Garden (opens 2.00 on Sundays) and buy a glass of their own honey - made there! Mind you they only sell on per customer. But this is delicious honey, made from the flowers and trees in Chelsea, possibly some on the other side of the river and most of all: the special medical herbs and stuff that grow in the garden itself. Tastes good and does good, too.

And if you want to know the story of the blues: the very first cotton plants that came to America were from that particular garden. And we all know what it led to.

Seasons greeting, you old ... eh ... friend. Keep up the good resolutions.

Torsie! ! ! And a Happy Christmas to you too!

I've noted the Chelsea Physic - nice.

Last Friday, some of the Institute met up at the National Film Theatre for a seasonal quaffing of Ale. I DID think of you there as well.

Take care Buddy!

Gee, I wonder if I could get that old phone booth.

Here's the kicker! It's actually NOT a public phone booth. It is a Police Box. It was invented in the US 1888 and introduced over here in the early 20th century. You might also remember it making an appearance in "Top Cat" TV cartoon show - yeah? There yah go!

The POLICE box acted sometimes as an on street temporary detention of criminals. It had an external phone purely for the local police station to be contacted by the beat officer OR the other way around OR a method for a member of the public to contact the police station. If the local sargeant wanted to contact the beat officer, he would ring the box and the light on top of the box would flash. Thereby summoning the beat officer. It was also a way for a station sergeant to ensure an officer was on the beat and was safe. The officer would have to call his sargent back at base on a predetermined time. If not then a patrol car would be dispatched to ascertain the whereabouts and safety of the beat officer.

For these reasons, the design and presence on the streets in major UK cities, embodies everything trustworthy and a symbol of something safe and dependable. Having the TARDIS materialise at times of major peril - Dr Who - would always ensure ultimate supremacy of GOOD over EVIL. Oh yes, social engineering at the most basic of levels. For me, I just hid behind the sofa, cackin my pants!

Therefore having a Police Box as the TARDIS is both an obvious choice and immediately signals authority and security in the minds of us '60s baby boomers!

Here's some links for all us retentive seekers of GOOD over EVIL!

And in the age old tradition of this period's Pantomime season: "Oh yes it is! Oh no it isn't! Oh yes it is! Oh no it isn't!"

Oh, those were the days. When the presence of a police officer made people feel more secure.
