The single-track transitions are a fast, easy way... you might also try transition from one track to another (higher) by dropping a transition onto the head of the "to-event" on the upper track.

That could be a good way to montage images: consider a long dissolve between two images on one track, while a third image dissolves-in using an event on a higher track. The power of Vegas' real-time preview shines here.
