Track drift out of time

mcm wrote on 11/19/1999, 11:29 PM
I am transfering 16 tracks digitaly from my DA-88's into
Vegas 1.0a using MOTU 2408. After about 5 min. the track
start to jump out of time and get worse over 10 min. We
are talking seconds out of time.

I'm running a PIII 450, 128mgs ram, seperate and empty
defraged Wester UDMA HD, SRP off, no plugings, using about
32mgs ram and about 30% disk access. I have set the sample
rates corectly, Word clock set, I'm not using SMPTE just a
straight transfer. I also have the MOTU "syncchronize by
start time" checked.

What is odd is if I transfer a 6 min song in and stop
everything is fine but if I transfer 10 min or more then on
playback after 5 min the tracks start drifting or jumping
out of time.

Q: Does it happen when you only record two tracks for longer than 5
min?

Q: 16 mono tracks correct? Are you recording them in stereo or mono.
(i.e. 8 tracks or 16 tracks in Vegas.)

On the > 5 min capture. Are the tracks actually out of align after 5
min or does Vegas seem to be messing up. If you play from say 4 min
into the recording, are the tracks out of sync at 5 min into the
track or after 5 min worth has played?

This is major wierdness.

I have to set up to repro this. I will get back to you...

Hi Peter,

It does not happen when you only record two mono tracks.

That is 16 mono tracks, recorded in mono.

On the > 5 min. capture the tracks are actually out of aligh after 5
min. If I play from 4 min into the recording 1 min later there is
sudden glitch where everything several tacks jump out of time. Also
several times when recording 16 mono tracks after taking Vegas out of
record it would lock up for a while or completely before it normaly
continues with asking about keeping tracks and building peaks.

I'm starting to think a hard disk problem. I will know more and be
able to do more tests on Sunday with a different project.

Thank you,
mcm

We've got a similar setup to you but to my knowledge no one has ever
recorded over about 7 min to the hard drive using Vegas. I am sure
willing to give it a try if it will help resolve the issue.

I am a bit hazy on the problem. Does the "out of sync" condition
occur during record and persist during playback?

What are you using for word clock master?

Have you tried switching masters? May be worth a shot.

I ask, because using the MOTU 2408 as word clock master seems to
cause intermittent weirdness on our setup.

Peter and Karl, As I said before I would be starting a new project
today and would have more time to work on the sync problem. I had
some extra time this morning so I un-installed and re-installed Vegas
and that seemed to do the trick. I just transfered in one pass 43
continuous mins.,16 mono tracks digital from the DA-88's to the MOTU
2408 to Vegas using the word clock from the DA-88's and everything is
in sync. Thank you both for your responce to my problem. mcm
