Track Motion - 2D Shadow difficulty

I have not been able to produce a shadow or glow. I am wondering if there is a glitch in my software -- or in me. Here are the steps I took in Vegas Pro 8.0c

1. Placed a test pattern image on track 1. Reduced the size using Crop/Pan

2. Placed a gray solid on track 2 using media generator.

3. Opened Track motion dialog on Track 1. Selected 2D Shadow, black color, increased intensity, enlarged and positioned shadow area.

Nothing I do lets me see a shadow, or a glow of any kind around my test pattern in the preview window.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

I think your shadow/glow is outside the viewable area. Just use track motion on the PIP track without the pan/crop. Take a look at the pan/crop and track motion training videos here:

Hope this isn't too basic, but I've gotten stuck on this for images that don't contain, say, enough white in the image to produce a glow or similar effects.

You might try replacing your content with some simple white text and see if that produces a glow...

Again, you may be WAY beyond that point...

Bruce,

You need to select the track motion button, not the pan crop. When you are in the track motion menu you can reduce the size of your video and click on the shadow button.

In order to reduce the size of the first track simply click on the corners of the box, make sure you have the "position" highlighted above the check box for the shadow. Once you change the size of track 1 you will see a Picture in picture effect with the shadow (if you check the box for shadow).

Hope this helps.

Any chance you have Split Screen View selected on your preview window? If you do, and FX Bypassed is the option selected here, and the object you are trying to add a shadow to is on the wrong side of the screen, you won't see the effect.

Just a stab in the dark.

Thanks everyone for your generous help on PIP shadow. Kim wins the cigar. I had the Split Screen selected and bypassed the FX.

Another button has been revealed...
