Transcode App options for editing in Vegas Pro

Cliff Etzel wrote on 7/20/2017, 12:06 PM

When I used Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, Media Encoder was my go to for converting my compressed clips to a more edit friendly format - now that I'm using Vegas Pro as my primary NLE, I'm trying to find options for transcoding my clips to 1080p 422 MXF files - Rosebud's Proxy script seems to have gone missing and is no longer available to download. I have used Cineform in the past but find the clips get rather large whereas the MXF files created are larger, but more reasonable in size compared to Cineform or DNxHD clips. I'm semi aware of Vegasaur and downloaded a trial but could not get the app to allow me to batch transcode my clips to see how well it would work. What other options are their for conversion of clips to prep for editing? My current footage is 1080p and I"m aware that VP14 (and VP15) will allow creating Proxies when I move to 4K.

TIA

I batch transcode with Vegasaur all the time. Once you figure it never had a single glitch. Worth every penny in my opinion.

@MartinE - I've been debating but since I can't seem to get the trial to batch convert some test clips - I"m hesitant to commit to purchasing... I followed the help directions and could not get it to do what the help file said it would do. Any thoughts?

Have you tried Catalyst Browse?

Vegasaur is so much more than just a batch transcoder and should be in everyone's tool box.

+1 for Vegasaur - super useful tool!

Have you looked at just allowing Vegas to create proxies (ie for UHD media) on the fly? Has some drawbacks, but means you can start working immediately.

I had totally forgotten about Catalyst Prepare which I have - My workflow for prepping is still entrenched where I do all my prep work for my clips (Clean up audio and export out to use with PluralEyes,, export those to a new folder, and then I transcode to a more Vegas friendly file format. My understanding is converting to MXF format (I'm converting to XAVC 50mbps 1080p Mainconcept codec vs SONY) and these don't seem to give Vegas any issues from what I've read here on the forums - are these compressed file formats and is there any sort of degradation of footage when converting? I also seem to have resolved the random crashes I was experiencing with VP13 since moving away from editing my cameras native compressed clips - is that your finding as well @OldSmoke?

I never had crashes with any version of Vegas except 14. I do find that 4K XAVC-I does edit smoother than XAVC-S, in both cases I mean the Sony version.

XAVC-I is 220Mb and 422 which Vegas can maintain too.

@OldSmoke - Is there any difference between the Mainconcept and SONY version?

Was wondering why you chose the SONY over the Mainconcept version...
