I don't know what happened, but in my Vegas 5, when I am trying to overlap photos or clips, they don't automatically crossfade. Even if I put them on the timeline one at a time and try to overlap them, there is just a solid line and I have to drag the upper corner down to produce the crossfade, and until I do this, I can't add any other transitions either. I have Ultimate S and even when I add transitions, I have to pull the corner of each picture down after I do it in order for the transitions to take effect. This is with all projects I am starting. Is there a setting I am missing? In preferences, then editing, I do have the box marked "automatically overlap". I hope this is just something silly I am overlooking, so if you have an answer, I would appreciate it! Thanks!
