OK, I think I'm doing something stupid. I want to insert a crossfade between two clips using the keypad '/' shortcut key on the numpad. I've tried selecting both clips, just the first, then just the second and nothing happens. I've used this before so I know it works. What on earth am I doing wrong?

I've also noticed other strange behavior. This will work the first time I drag clips/pictures to the timeline in a fresh project. But if I select everything on the timeline using ctrl+A or the drop-down Edit=>Select All, then delete everything, the keypad shortcut will never work on that project again with any clips/pictures.
