Transitions stopped working

I loaded a project I am working on where I was adding transitions. I noticed that there were no transition icons or any indication of a transition at the locations were I had previously inserted transitions. But when playing the preview I could see the transition effect. When I attempted to add a new transition, there was no effect, nothing happens. A transition is not added, preview shows no transition effect. After a lot of poking around trying to figure out what is going on, Vegas crashed with several pop ups, many which seemed to refer to FX operations. Then I could not gain control of the computer, I could not even shut down because of a continuous loop of message pop-ups that refered to the inability to save a temp file, I finally had to pull the plug on the computer. After restarting I am back to where I was above. Transitions are not displayed and I can not add transitions.

Any ideas?

I have found that if I start with a new project, I can add transitions and they are represented by a bar with an x shapped icon like they are supposed to be. But if I load any existing project, I can sort of add a transition, it is not represented by an icon and when played it only shows the transition as being a few frames long rather then the full length. Since there is no icon to click on I can't get to its properties to see how long it is supposed to be or try to make it longer. When I try to add transitions to the project that I was working on when the problem first occurred, nothing happens.
