Traveling edit?

I don't know what else to call this. Here's what I have in mind:

Two events on the time line -- call them "Dog" and "Cat" -- butted next to each other, creating a cut. I want to grab the right hand edge of Dog with the cursor and lengthen the clip. If I do that I'll get a cross fade. But what I want is the cut; I just want it occuring at a slightly later point on the time line. So I'd like to have the left hand edge of Cat move along at the same time the right hand edge of Dog is moving.

Perhaps there's a way to do this that I've missed. Suggestions welcomed.

Jack

Hold down CTRL+Alt with the cursor positioned over the jumpcut, and drag. You'll see the out point of the left event move to the right, and the in point of the right event move right/later too. Or, go the other way, and drag to the left, you'll see the in/out point change. Rolling Edits in Vegas are easy, just not well known.
You can also slip edit an event, by holding ALT and dragging inside the event. YOu'll see the cursor change to a box w/ two arrows inside it.

Man, I thought I knew all these neat shortcuts, but that's one I missed.

Thanks, Spot!

John, if there is even the smallest thing I can teach you about Vegas, it literally makes my morning. :-) Thx. I'll bet I learn more from your posts than you do from mine.

Spot,

That's very kind. While it's true that I might know a few things about computers, when it comes to sound and video, I am still at the bottom of the learning curve. You on the other hand ... well ... let's just say I don't have any fancy statues on my mantle.

Thanks, Spot. That does the trick. I have no idea where this tip lurks in the "Help Menu." Glad you're aware of it.

Slipping and Sliding Events > Slide a crossfade or transition

Jack, on the DVInfo.net site, there is a downloadable shortcut pdf that offers instant access to these sorts of things.
Glad to be of help!
