Trickery involving placement of images

I just purchased a theater curtain video clip that depicts theater curtains opening and revealing a white movie
screen (curtains and screen are seen at the same time in the shot)

Once the screen appears, I would like to
Put another image on the screen—my next video sequence—which is an old-fashioned movie leader countdown, to give the illusion that it is being projected on the movie screen.
With me, so far?

What’s the best way to attempt this trickery in Vegas?

If it's an uncompressed AVI clip it may have a transparency stream. Try selecting a chroma option from the clips media properties.

If it doesn't have transparency information, use the chroma keyer set to white on the clip, with your video on a lower track.

You may need to set the colour with the dropper and adjust the low and high sliders.

Since the projected image will be in front of the screen and curtain, you could simply drop the count down clip on a track above the screen clip and use pan/crop or track motion to reduce it to the proper size. If the countdown clip spills onto the curtain, well, that's fine because that's exactly what would happen in a real theatre. Fade the screen clip darker just before or as the countdown starts to give the effect of the room lights dimming.
