Drop onto T/L, split where you need it split, delete the bit you don't want and render to a new file, delete the original file. No pixies will get harmed unless it's HDV.
This is the quickest way I know of although I suspect there's a smart utility out there somewhere that'll do a real split without rendering.

It's funny, trimming w/o rendering seems like it would be part of the basic feature set. But I'm new to all this, so what do I know, LOL.

I use the shareware program Easy Video Splitter and it works great. It seems not to be supported anymore, nor do they even accept payment, but it still works. I got it here:

You can, in a way, by creating subclips from the trimmer.

I don't think you'd want the option to destructively manipulate your source files. Too much room for disaster in that equation.

Assuming it's an SD AVI file, VIrtualDub will do this and it's free.

If your source is a DV AVI file, it will not re-render. It will make a trimmed exact copy of the file.
